Ken Harold Klassen Most people have heard of Java, Borneo (Kalimantan), New Guinea (Irian Jaya), Bali and the Spice Islands! But, what do these exotic islands have in -common? They are all part of.a vast archipelago called In- donesia. _ Indonesia, the fifth largest country in the world, is a nation of more than 13,500 islands stretching east to west across 3,200 miles of Pacific Ocean. In- donesia’s 180 million people live in some of the most isolated areas of the world. The heart- beat of Indonesia is the densely populated island of Java. This Dave Parker M.L.A. for Skeena 635-4215 predominantly Muslim island boasts a population of 100 million people — 1,500 people per square mile. In 1972 Harold and Maureen Klassen and their young family concluded their ministry in Ft. Nelson, a very sparsely popu- lated area in northern B.C., and joined forces with other Chris- tian and Missionary Alliance . personnel in reaching Indonesia with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Indonesia is a fast-emerging third world country. The Klas- sens have witnessed the country taking tremendous strides for- ward both economically and educationally. Politically, the country has been extremely stable for the past two decades. Phenomenal things are happen- ing in this very religion- orientated country. In its brief 62-year history, the Christian _and Missionary Alliance has seen a national church emerge with a membership of almost half a million people. Mis- sionaries, along with the na- tional church, have been active in the areas of education, evangelism, Scripture trans- lation, literature distribution, radio, and some medical work. A special program for establish- ing 500 churches on Java is presently in progress. Since 1978, the Klassens have been involved in the national church’s publishing house, pastoring an international church and mission administra- tion. As part of the publishing house, they have coordinated a nation-wide radio ministry for, the past seven years. Harold states that ‘‘radio and literature are two very important keys in reaching such a diverse populace as there is in Indonesia.”’ You are invited to hear Rev. Harold Klassen speak at the rere om . 7. - Missionaries to share experiences Alliance Church, 4923 Agar Ave., on Thursday and Friday evening at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday morning at 11:00 a.m. Helen Lee Rey. Joseph and Mrs. Helen Lee, Christian and Missionary Alliance missionaries to Peru, have been ministering among 60,000 Chinese in the city of _ Lima since 1981. Although these people are ethnically Chinese, culturally they are Peruvian. The Lees have been pastoring the Lima Alliance Church with the aim of building an in- digenous church with strong Christian -workers and lay leaders, especially in light of the constant political and economic changes within the country. The church offers many programs to attract the Chinese community to its doors. Rev. and Mrs. Lee are vigor- ously involved in building botha spiritual and a physical church, While they are home in Canada for one year on furlough, the superstructure of the church building is being finished. A well-built church will make a great impact among the Chinese people in the years to come. Two-thirds of the population of Peru are either unemployed or underemployed as a result of the economic problems that plague the country. Masses of rural people flock to the cities, exacerbating the problem, The ministry of the church is crucial. As a whole, the Alliance church- es in Peru are vibrant, growing, and committed to the Great Commission given by Jesus. You are invited to hear Mrs. Helen Lee speak and to view her slides of Peru during the annual Missions Conference of the Alliance Church, 4923 Agar Ave., at 7:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday evenings, Feb. 7 and 8. And who knows for how many years she will carry the good feelings, born in the intimacy of that fleeting moment? ‘You can’t have mountaintop experiences if you are never allowed to visit the mountain, When a child stays with you for three months, that can be three months of at least | visiting the mountain; that’s why it’s so important to expose out foster children to as much of the world around them as possible. It may be the only exposure they ever get as children. But they can go back far more enriched than they would have been, had they never had their few months in your home. And if they never in their childhood have the opportunity to visit the mountain again, they may well think, "That's OK.
