During a recent excursion through the structure Terrace.architect Royce Condie indicated some. of the reasons. the project proved to be in- teresting and challenging to him. : The:' design required about three years to com- plete, he said, and it was evolved in consultation with-RCMP and the City of Terrace; the primary considerations were security and traffic flows through the building. Anyone walking into the building by the public entrance has to make two 90-degree. turns through two sets of double glass doors. During night hours entry will have to be ap- proved through an inter- com system. Through the inner set of doors the receptionist’s office is visi- ble through a sheet of C and fInishing of co puters simply by picking nerete walls and floors Is presently : in the Interior of Terrace’s new RCMP headquarters, to architect — A large open space next. to the reception area is populated by desks and. counters for the use of. RCMP members engaged in paperwork. Across’ a corridor offices look across what will eventually . become a parking lot toward city hall.. Behind the reception area and away from public access are a.large room dedicated to files and a. ‘specially designed, clirhate controlled chamber for the detachment telecom- munication center, Condie _ points. out a grid of steel supports suspended a few inches above the floor covering the entire room. He explains the finished floor will consist of removable steel panels providing access to a cavi- ty underneath, Techni- cians will be able to change wiring and connec- tions to the communica- tions equipment and com- up sections of the false floor. In the back of the building on the main floor workmen in the cell block are concentrating on con- crete finishing, using grinders to smooth down irregularities in the walls Tenant sought for. old quarters TERRACE — When the Terrace RCMP move into their new building sometime this spring the basement. premises they now occupy municipal hall will be available for lease. Ac- cording to city Clerk- Administrator Bob Hallsor, the municipality has not. found a tenant. “There’s an effort be- ing made to find someone, but it’s difficult because we don’t know the oc- cupancy date yet,’’ Hallsor said. Preliminary contacts have been made, he said, indicating the city can offer an attractive rate to prospective tenants. Terrace RCMP, he said, paid $23,000 last year for the 5,000 square foot space. Hallsor indicated the quarters would be most suitable for a government agency or crown corpora- tion. He said the cellblock area will be used: by the municipality for storage. Speculation that the Regional. District of Kitimat-Stikine might move into the basement has proven unfounded. | Although the regional district announced inten- tions to occupy part of the government agent build- ing on Lakelse Ave., assis- tant regional district ad- ministrator Bob Marcellin recently confirmed that negotiations on the cost of the lease were unsatisfac- tory and a different loca- tion is being sought. : trance for staff members. | 1 -naturally. lit from above “py ground-level skylights “sloping outwards from the in the sometime around May. and floors. The cell area is accessible by a circuitous route from the front of the building and a garage en- trance, called a ‘“‘secure bay’’, in the back. Rooms around the perim- | éter of the basement are pase of the exterior walls. A large assembly room with a sliding soundproof | partition occupies one cor- ner, and much of the re- maining basement area is taken up by rooms that will eventually become la- boratories. Condie estimates the finished building will be rare pe ready for Occupancy onerete and steel cells in the new Terrace RCMP bullding are designed for the safety of both prisoners and police personnel. ; “Oh q Terrace ; nn Fine Dining An | in 1 | in quiet surroundings! ea 5:00 p.m. — 10:00 p.m. 4620 LAKELSE AVE. 638-8141 GIM’S 3§ RESTAURANT au” Chinese & Canadian Food . i OPEN 7 DAYS A WEEK Mon-Wed 11:30 AM.— 10:00 PM 4 Np Thursday 11:30 AM — 11:00 PMee Fri-Sat 11:30 AM — 1:00 AM Sunday 12:00 AM — 10:00 PM i 4643 Park Avenue 635-6111 YOU can tell your Specializing in Chinese Cuisine and Canadian Dishes a, 4606 Gralg Ave., .
