It was around Christmas time, and the Morales family was pinch- ing their pennies in order to get along. ee by Philip Musselman The Morales family is from Chile, from which they escaped to avoid a futureless life amongst economic and social dif- ficulties. The country of Chile is ruled under a dic- tatorship, where enor- f phone.rang. There was no mous portions of the population are put to death but some manage to escape the country, Mor- ales said. There is no. future for the country’s youth, and there is no hope for the old, he added, Last year Tirso Morales and his family were just breaking even, when his wife received news that her father was very sick and it was only a matter of time before he died. Friends of the family, close and not so close, had gotten together and had purchased a round trip ticket to Vina Del Mar, Chile for her, These friends had also raised some money to help her get: along in the South American country for awhile. = 7 : Soon Sylvia was broke because of hospital. fees and other costs, so~she phoned home looking. for some money. The family had no money to send her, but one day when her hus- . band Tirso was inthe bank, trying to figure out how much he could send her from his pay cheque, a friend approached him. Tirso received $100 from this person and was very taken back, This money didn’t last too long either, by then Sylvia’s .father had died and she again needed money to help pay for funeral and hospital costs. Suddenly another friend of the family visited their home to drop off another $100. Again Tirso was sur- prised and felt very good ‘about the generosity of these people, his employer had even loaned him $100 for his wife. “T will never forget the help that these people gave .. us,” Tirso explained, ‘‘we do not even know who to thank for this goodwill.’’ _Now the Morales family is doing well, Tirso is working at instructor, and Sylvia. is working also.
