As part of the 1967 Centen-
nial celebrations, a Veterans’
Week is scheduled for the wee!
o£ June 11 to 17, 1967,

Purpose is to bring Legion
activities more into the public
eye and to stress .the many
“behind the scenes” funetions
of the Royal Canadian Legion.

A committee under the chair-
manship of Comrade S. Sheasby
has been formed to plan the
program for the local Veterans’
Week, all Legionaires and vet-
erans are urged to give full
support to the week as it will
be celebrated in Terrace.

Comrade Nick Nattress is at
tending (he Legion Convention
in Kelowna as a delegate from
Branch No. 13. In addition ta
many urgent problems in con-
nection with the Sports Train-
ing Plan, Nick’has been charg-
ed with making recommenda
tions regarding membership in
the Legion and we have great
hopes thal ke will be able to
hring home the bacon.

In spile of the rain pouring
down while this is belng writ-
ten, the signs of approaching
summer .are unmistakable —
the rebins are pulling worms,
garden mowers are heing
sharpened, spades are he-
ing cleaned, rakes polished
up and the Legion Dart Com-
pelition 1s drawing to a close
and will be shut down for th
summer ‘months. . ‘

However, your entertainment
commiliee is planning for other
diversions during the summer
months and, knowing Comrade
Taft as we do, we may look
forward to an intet-branch golf
tournament sometime during
this coming summer, so — pol-
ish your clubs, sharpen your
game and be prepared.

For those who will not be
able to visit Expo 67, we are in
the process of obtaining films
from the National Film Board
showing the .preparations fot
“Expo” as well as some of tha
more important features of the
exposition itself. Watch your
column for future details.

The seed-growing process
which can be viewed in the
Mantel’s garden, 838 North
Kalum, is unusual.

"Yn the early spring, heads of
cabbage, carefully selected for
firmness and appearance, ate
planted in the ground with only
the top of the cabbage exposed.
YELLOW FLOWERS

These cabbages then take raot

| and grow into a tall bushy

plant with small yellow flow-
ers, In late summer the flowers
fall off leaving a seed pod
which is picked and emptled

OBITUARY

Kelowns, B.C,

A former resident of Ter-
race, Herbert Francis “Tim”
Noakes 42, died in Kelowna
Hospital on May 2 following
a brief iIness. .

For a number of years Tim
Noakes taught school in Ter-
race in both elementary and
high school grades. He was a
popular member of the com-
munity. .

He left Terrace seven years
years ago and maved to Steve-
ston where he was librarian in
the high school: Last Septem-
ber he moved to -Kelowna
where he accepted the position
as librarian in Rutland High
School.

His wife Solvig survives him.
Funeral services were held in
Kelowna on May 4.
