First it was the Downtown Eastside, which has been in the headlines for the past two weeks following the mass evictions by two hotels of their tenants, some of whom have been residents for as long as 30 years. Now the eviction epidemic is spreading, with West End apartment owners throwing out their residents in preparation for the anticipated Expo trade. __. With fears that the Mount Pleasant neighborhood will be the next scene of mass evictions, residents, with the backing of city officials, are organizing and pressing the provincial government to enact legislative clout. The Downtown Eastside Residents Association (DERA) has been rallying hotel and rooming house dwellers in the wake of full scale evictions from two area hotels — the Patricia and the Regal — while the Tenants Rights Action Centre has found itself swamped with complaints fol- lowing a rash of West End evictions. But so far, Socred cabinet ministers who could enact necessary legislation have refused to do so. Some 400 mainly Downtown Eastside residents packed the Ukrainian Hall Feb. 25 to tell Expo chairman Jimmy Pattison they see PROVINCIAL page 2 Sub rates up We've held out for four years but finally the cost of producing the Tribune has over- taken the current subscription rates. We’ve been compelled to increase the price although we think the hike is a modest one — and it is the first since Feb. 1, 1982. As of Apr. 1, the price of a one-year subscription, now $14, will rise to $16. A six-month sub will be $10 while the rate for two and three-year subs will be $28 and $40 respectively. Postal increases have forced us to raise the price of foreign subs more steeply, from the current $20 to $25. Display and classified ad rates will remain the same.
