LES FRANCOFOLIES DE VANCOUVER What do francophones do when they are left to their own devices? They devise francophone entertainment! And they invite their friends over. That’s pretty much how the first FRANCOFO- LIES DE VANCOUVER came to be. The FRANCOFOLIES DE VANCOUVER will offer, from September 20 to 29, a ten- day festival of French culture at four different venues: La Maison de la Francophonie, 1555 West 7th Avenue; the Pacific Cinematheque, 1131 Howe Street; the Vancouver Playhouse; and the Orpheum. For the duration, the Maison de la Francopho- nie will house a café-concert in the best of French tradition, Le Café Rimbaud, part bistrot, part cabaret. For their Vancouver debut, the FRANCOFOLIES are putting on an ambitious program of film, poetry, and music, an original art T-shirt exhibition and a book launching. Movie buffs will find the weekend of September 21-22 crammed full with features and documentaries they may never see otherwise. One of the documentaries, and very timely too, is a portrait of outspoken, controversial and by now legen- dary union leader, Michel Chartrand, by his film-making son, Alain. One of the movies featured is award-winning director, Jean-Pierre Lefebvre’s, «Le fabuleux voyage de l’ange» star- ring, as it were, singer, Daniel Lavoie who will also close the FRANCOFOLIES with his live show at the Orpheum on Sep- tember 29. And for those of you with «immersed children,» the program includes a wonderful children’s movie By Roger Can- tin, «Simon les nuages», a story about a summer in the country and extinct animals. Check page 4 of this program for the complete details. Did I mention singers? Well, Montréal’s Karen Young in her new incarnation will be at the Café Rimbaud on the 26th of September; Joelle Rabu, on the 28th; Richard Desjardins at the Playhouse on the 27th; and Daniel Lavoie at the Orpheum on the 29th. Joelle Rabu needs no introduction in Vancouver, this will give you the opportunity to hear her latest material ina smaller room just like in the good old days. Karen Young was, not so long ago, an established jazz singer who decided to broaden her horizons and improved in the process. You may have heard Richard Desjardins at the 1990 Folk Festival—al- though what he was doing there, being anything but a folksinger, is anybody’s guess. He has become famous since, so it may be a good idea to give him another listen. As for Daniel Lavoie, he’s been a star for so long and so consistently that it becomes difficult to say anything more about him. Except, perhaps, that he’s better than ever. Poetry? You’ll find it in its purest form at the Café Rimbaud on September 25th when Michel de Maulne, the director of the Maison de la Poésie de Paris, gives a composite VENDREDI 20 SE PTEM BRE Pour la clientele scolaire .
