R.J. Palmer, Vector Control Officer, Simon Fraser Health Unit, and advising that in view of the rising number of complaints from various sectors of Canada concerning an apparent outbreak of biting flies, the Research Branch of his Department called a National Work Planning, Meeting on Biting Flies and Their Control; however, the pre- blem caused by mosquitos is being worked on in an effort to control these insects as well. Alderman Meyer, speaking to the foregoing resolution, advised that the Health & Welfare Committee is pursuing the concept of genetic control for mosquitos, which has met with some success in the United States, and stated he would be, reporting on this aspect when more information is received, From Alderman G. Laking, January 19th, 1973 concerning May Day cele- brations, and advising that the Co-ordinator, Mr. Lee Kallen, had contacted — 3 firms in connection with the construction of a float for the City of Port. Coquitlam for May Day and other wlebratians in the Lower Mainland. In his report, Alderman Laking advised that only one firm, namely, Artcrafts Ltd., submitted a proposal for a float that would cost approximately $4,590.00 to construct. A model of the float was placed on view, and Alderman Laking ex- plained that it was designed to depict the City's Diamond Jubilee, with a working fountain at the lower end and a large mirror at the elevated end with 1913 on one side and 1973 on the other. Aiderman Ranger suggested that ‘the uther two firms be contacted aad requested to submit proposals in order that it may be determined whether or not the figura of $4,500.06 is equitable.
