Board to cut deep . THE NEXT SET of cuts to School District .82 to help balance its deficit budget are across the board, says school board chair Linda Campbell, “We've nickled and dimed to where we are now,’ said Linda Campbell, ' who took over as chair when Roger Leclerc resigned last month, ‘Everyone is looking at culs,”” Trustees are even consid- ering cutting their own _ 8tipends, she said. The district faces a $1 mil- lion shortfall caused, in part, when fewer students en- tolled than predicted. That means it will receive less money from the province than anticipated, But the district is asking education minister Paul Ramsey for the $500,000 that it stands to lose. The district is 124 students short of what it anticipated in spring when it set spend- ing and staffing levels for the yéar. ; Campbell said programs such as music aren't going to be cut, but she couldn't _ say what other action is planned. ‘In discussions with Ram- . sey, Campbell said he told her that any locally devel- oped program not financed by the ministry has to be looked at. . “We're trying to hold onto programs for dear life,’’ she said. She said the board is as- king Ramsey if it can sell the teacherages in Kitimat, but he has yet to givé them = the go-ahead. The next line of cuts won't deal with teacher. layoff notices either, Camp- bell said. Recent cuts to balance the ‘budget include eliminating a maintenance foreman’s position in Kitimat, cutting library assistants’ hours, reducing school-based cteri- cal staff in Kitimat, eliminatng a photocopy person position in the Ter- tace. office. and $25,000 by, filling. a vacant: director of instruction posi- — tion with an administrative staff member. She explained that deci- sions have been set by the government, but it’s the dis- trict that has to do all the cutting. Campbell said she’s going to tell ‘the minister that trustees are doing the best they can. Accarding to her, 16 other districts stand to lose money due to drops in enrollment. And everyone is waiting for Ramsey’s announcement whether or not they'll get that money replaced.
