Save some money LOCAL DRIVERS can ex- pect an ICBC discount in the neighbourhood of $10 provided they have a device which prevents their vehicle from being stolen. The devices are called passive immobilizing sys- tems in that they don’t re- quire any effort by the driver to activate. That translates —_— into devices in new cars or ones which are installed later that cut off of a vehicle’s gas supply or disable its electri- cal system when the ignition key is removed, says ICBC official Sam Corea. “The discount doesn’t apply to devices such as the Club which require an effort on the part of the driver,” he said. Nor does it apply to devices which require a driver to push a button on a Temote contral key chain device or which require a separate key, “Something which a driver could forget to do doesn’t qualify,’ said Corea. The discount works aut to 15 per cent of the annual theft portion of a driver’s optional comprehensive or specified perils coverage. It’s lower in the northwest where the theft risk is lower and higher in the lower mainland where the risk is grcatest, Corea said the discount teflecis the success of devices which stop vehicle theft. Last year, ICBC theft claims cost nearly $87 mil- lion. ICBC likes passive sys- tems as they offer the high- est level of protection. The crown corporation has published a booklet on anti- theft devices and its avail- able at claim centres, Berk a Open again ELAINE TEMPLE stands outside the Kalum Hote! building at Heritage Park which is open for another season. Fewer students means less money from the province and it’s one of the reasons for the budget deficit crisis which has occupied the board and parents. It’s one of the reasons layoff notices have already issued been issued to teachers considered surplus now that are fewer studenis. Last year a $400,000 cash infusion from the provincial government helped buffer what would have been a more serious deficit through the loss of more than 240 students. That money was ticd direclly to the loss of 107 For this coming year a fur- ther dip of more than 100 students is expected but there might cven be more and Skeena Cellulose fig- ures again in the equation, Layoff notices issued last weck to the company’s Prince Rupert employees will have an economic im- pact here, says school dis- trict secretary-treasurer Barry Piersdorff. “What takes place in Prince Rupert will have an effect here,’’ he said. The pending closure of the Terrace Co-op's main store building, resulting in the layoff of 80 people, will also cut enrollment figures, Piersdorff predicted, With cach missing student representing a loss of Autoplan agencies and retailers which sell them. + students due to the uncertain _ future of Skeena Cellulose, $4,005 on average, the dis- . trict’s budget could be fur- The courtroom was packed. Hesides, I heard that Harry, the minister, made a confeasion to the police that he had abused his daughter because he himself had been abused as a child and that he was also the victim of Sataniam. Patricia glowered at her friends, You are both so stupid. Dont you know anything? The latest word is that he recanted his confeasion. Said it was caused by false memories as well. That when his wife confronted him with the daughters accusa- tions, they both went into counselling. And the therapist made suggestions, I tell you, you cant believe anybody anymore. Suddenly the back doors of the court- YOu BE THE JUDGE False Memories BASED ON ACTUAL COURT CASES room were thrown open. All rise, the court is now in session, Patricia couldnt resist the last word, Watch my word, this case is going to be thrown out, The mother told me just this morning that her daughter is so upset ‘she is not going to testify against her father, The guard motioned to her to keep quiet as the Crown called expert witnesa- es to the stand, The experts presented the case, Your Honour, Leslie said she was abused. She remembered it once in therapy. What makes adjustments 80 difficult during times of declining enrollment is that missing students come from all over the school district. And that makes it difficult to eliminate teaching posi- lions at any one school. The province did an- nounce earlier this year plans to hire more teachers to reduce class sizes in retum for pay freezes but the final numbers haven’t been worked out yet. “We've been told not to budget for that,’ said Piersdorff.
