Parks are spacial places for many different-teasons but one of the most imporlant reasons Is lhal they provide a place to protect plants both bly and smal. One of the most prevalent plants in the Lakelse Lake Provineial Park is the OOhhhh smell that... Skunk Cabbage. The entire plant has a skunk odor. The leaves are simple and larga growing on stout stalks. The flowers are a greenish yellow and they grow In vary wel, vety swanipy areas In forests. Some nalive people refer ta skunk cabbage as "Indian wax paper’ because groups with access to the lage shiny leaves traditionally used hem In many ways such as waxed paper, for lining food-steaming pils, and wrapping or covering food. Another common plant at the park is the Thinbleberry Itis an eract shrub up to 5.2 cin lall with large soft mapla shaped leaves. The frulls are raspberry like with red, halry droplets and julcy, Thimbleberrlas were eaten by all native groups and the young shools were peeled and eaten raw or cooked with meal ina slew. Athird major plant in the park fs Devil's Club. This is a fearsome plant to lhe outdoor hiker, as it has spines that readily break off and soon fester If embedded in tha skin - henca the name Davil's Club. The leaves are broad, maple-shapad and have heavily toothed lobes. The flowers are sinall whillsh and numerous in compact heads. The plant was widely used by native peopla as an ailment for ulcars, diabetes, and as a cough syrup. , One mambar of the berry family that's prevalent in the park fs the Bunchberry. The plant is fow and trailing and woody at the base and can range from §-20-¢m tall. The flowers consist of 4 white fo purplish tinged clusters, Tha native people Gitksan ale ’ them with other berries, and used tham in cooking as Ihickaners or glue like agents. However, most of the ime they were considered only good for hears ar birds. Another plant which occurs in the Old Growth farast at Lakelsa Lake Park Is caled _ Goat's Bead. Tha name goat's beard refers to the large while flower clusters, also known as spaghatil flower, They grow in tha moist forest araas with white tiny densely packed flowers. There are lots of plants in the ald growth forest of Lakelse Lake Park and the only way to Identify the many species is to be there on a frequent basis. The park interpreter guides trall walks in the park twice a weak. . Be there and start to identify new plants each week.
