Rita is a long-time Terrace resident, having: moved to Terrace from. Vancouver in 1946 after marrying Ken Kerr. “I’m still a city girl,” says Rita. Their only son, Richard was the . first baby born in the Red Cross Hospital in Terrace in the late 1940's. Mrs. Woodhouse was born in Ulvorston, Cumbria, England on Jan. 16, 1887 fo Margaret Alice and Captain Henry Thomas Robinson, a Master Mariner. In January of 1913, she married Richard Woodhouse, a childhood ONE YEAR AGO : ‘THIS WEEK... Canada in the spring of 1912 for the marriage. Shortly after their arrival, Eleanor was hospitalized with a ruptured appendix, delay- ing the wedding. She was a school teacher in England before she married. Rita says, "She always remained the school teacher. We all knew how to read and write before kinder- garten.” She adds that her mother has always been "a per- fectionist and an intellectual”. Rita gives particular credit to her mother for teaching the ‘children values and etiquette. Her father was a real family man. Rita fondly recalls a story he told her shortly before his death about a Christmas when he -and. their mother wired and decorated an old dollhouse for the girls for Christmas. It was switched in such a way that when they turned on the parlour light on Christmas morning, the dollhouse lit up. Her father remembered that as the happiest day of his life. She says both their parents brought them up as individuals. Their father frowned upon peer pressure, often asking the rhe- Eleanor Woodh ouse celebrates 105th friend, in Toronto. Eleanor and -her mother had travelied to torical question, “If someone were jumping off a bridge, would you follow them?" The _ family, which included four girls, Rita being the third (the last born died nine days after her birth), lived in Toronto for many years. a Mr. Woodhouse, an structural engineer, built a bungalow for the two of them after the girls grew up and moved away. He died in his mid-seventics. Mrs. Woodhouse stayed. in their home until she was’ in her eighties. ” She was an avid gardener and kept a beautiful home. She then moved into her.own apartment when the house got to be too much work. . In 1983, at age 96, after th death of her eldest daughter and son-in-law in Cambridge, Ontario, (with whom she had lived for 10 years), Eleanor Woodhouse moved to Terrace with the assistance of her daugh- ter Rita and Rita’s son Richard. Mr. and Mrs. Woodhouse had once been to Terrace to visit their daughter and her family. The Woodhouse name lives on in 105-year-old Eleanor Wood- house and in cousins across the country and in the United States.
