Travelling Discovery Boxes As part of the province-wide mandate of the SCIENCE WORLD Outreach program, SCIENCE WORLD has developed Travelling Discovery Boxes. The Travelling Discovery Boxes are a collection of the most successful Discovery Boxes in the. Search Gallery at SCIENCE WORLD. They are designed to travel throughout the province, making science learning entertaining and accessible to the children of B.C. This year, the Terrace & District Teachers’ Association, in cooper- ation with a number of other donors, decided to fund the Dis- covery Boxes for the benefit of School District #88 students. At a cost of $1500, thirty Discovery Boxes have been made available through SCIENCE WORLD to local students in the three weeks leading up to Science Week. The collection of boxes is self- contained and designed for easy travel and set-up. Subjects covered . by the boxes include: the trees of British Columbia, mammals, birds, industries of nature, rocks, min- erals and shells, and more. Accom- panying graphics are brief and understandable for all ages. The boxes promote learning by encour- aging students’ natural curiosity, and accompanying resource materials provide a wealth of in- formation for training volunteers and developing follow-up class- room activities. Last week, the Terrace Review visited the library of Uplands Elementary Schoo] to view the Discovery Boxes firsthand. As part . of an on-going programme of Assisted Learning, Ken Morton’s Grade 6/7 class and Melayne Gough’s kindergarten class were working in pairs (one senior and one primary student) investigating the Discovery Boxes and going through the assigned exercises specified for each. The boxes were rotated among the pairs after the boxes had been thoroughly exam- ined and tasks were completed, Some of the Travelling Dis- covery Boxes include; Animal Dentist - examine a bear’s skull and its teeth.
