I have tried being popular but it never works. Can you give me some hints on how to be popular? Being unpopular is often a state of mind. Too often we pick a group we think we might like to be a part of and try to behave in a way that impresses them in an ‘effort to get in. It rarely works, and even if it does it’s a relation- ship probably doomed to failure and rejection. People with similar interests and behaviors end up in the same ‘group... whether they like it or not. This isn’t to say things can’t be changed. but it. does means you _ will have to change a little your- self and that can take some effort. If you want to get in with a "bad" group, forget it. It’s not ‘worth the effort. If, on the other hand, you want to improve your felattalad A friend for Crystal Scott _” A friend is someone who will ’ always be there _” A friend is someone who will always care _ A friend is someone to talk to A friend is someone who you can turn to when you don’t know what to do, A friend is someone who makes you smile A friend is someone you want to be with awhile A friend is someone who'll be there when you cry -a friend is someone who'll be there when you die. What do the kids in your selected group like and how do they behave? If you like similar things, half the battle is won. And if you can change your behavior to something accept- able within that group, you’ve won ihe other half too. - This might mean changing some habits, though. For example, can you handle parties without booze or can you learn to enjoy some “type of club activities rather "hanging out"? The answer to your question is really up to you, but anyone who wants to change badly enough can do it if they try. If you don’t think you fit into any group, you probably need some help. Tell a counsellor or a parent how you feel and it might not be as big a problem as what you think. Daphne Heenan was one of the Skeena Theatre Arts students who wowed ‘em in the group's performance of School Daze last weekend at the R.E.M, Lee. Caledonia students dig out Students of Caledonia celebrated Earth Day with a number of activities that rec- ognized the need to clean up our environment. The largest and messiest of the projects was to clean out Howe Creek which runs from Parkside School, around the base of the Bench, and eventually through a culvert under Skeena Sawmills on Highway 16 West. This particular project Originated in Mr, Greave’s two biology classes where students said ‘‘we wanted to make a con- tribution’’. The 40 students were concerned that Howe Creek, always a popular spawning ground for trout, was becoining so clogged and polluted that eventually, the fish would find another creek in which to spawn. The students spent an entire Friday afternoon, begin- ning in the creek behind Park- side School, hauling out old tires, grocery buggies, bicycles, bottles and cans. ; .The students transported the ‘junk’ to the front lawn of ‘Caledonia, via many pick-ups loaded time and again. Once the debris was sorted and the re- cyclables boxed for their various destinations, a school district maintenance truck arrived. With the assistance of the students, it was loaded for delivery to the ‘dump. The students lightened the atmosphere of this environ- mental blot with mud fights and ‘tag games. | _ ‘In conjunction with the Howe Creek clean-up, the students are writing letters to residents whose property borders the creek, with a plea to maintain the creek and to report any abuse they might observe. A letter to the Depart- ment of Fisheries and Oceans, Terrace office, requested assistance in designing and building a fish ladder to help the fish into the creek from the Skeena River. They are also hoping to organize a meeting with Skeena Sawmills management to discuss re-routing the creek to allow the fish access to a more natural en- vironment than the culvert that runs under the full length of the mill site to the Skeena River. They plan to lobby CN and Highways to cease herbicide spraying, especially near the creek. The students explain that this is not a short-term project, They say Mr. Greave has committed himself and present and future biology classes to ensure the resurrection of Howe Creek, with future possibilities of hik- ing trails, and tree planting to provide shade for the fish. Other Earth Day projects in the school included a tree-plant- ing ceremony, a clean-up of the school and surrounding area, and recycling cans and bottles placing boxes around the school, . for collection on a regular basis.
