Leona Wilcox, who fired her second lifetime hole-in-one at the Skeena Valley Golf Club last month, added the Skeena Vailey Ladies’ Open Tournament to her 1986 honors on July Sth weekend when she'shot the overall low gross score of 183. Her 36-hole score top- ped Dale Loader of Kitimat by five strokes. The overall low net score went to Susan Little with a 137. Wilcox adds to honors honors for the cham- pionship flight while clubmate Irene Skolos placed second at 217. Jackie Drummond- Arney shot a 158 for low net with Alice den Boer of Smithers next at 167. Drummond-Arney plays out of Prince Rupert. In the first flight, Lynn Cooper’s 206 took gross honors. Joy Dover was next at 208. Helen Williams won the net with a 150 score. Darlene Hunter of Kitimat was. Loader took gross runner-up at 152. Bonnie Shaw won the | second flight gross with 221. Donna Graf was next at 231. Ms. Brorup suggested that Terrace council should have made a decision based on the information her group provided, without seeking other opinions or studying any other information. She says fluoride is a poison. I agree. So are sodium and chlorine, the ingredients of table salt. So is water, as Dr. Zucchiatti pointed out, if you drink enough of it. _ She admits that we take in fluorides from the air, _ in food and in toothpaste, but does not suggest we stop brushing our teeth, eating or breathing. She suggests a referendum. Since May 5, when | © took an open-minded approach to the anti-fluoride. presentation (to the point of taking the question to the Skeena Union Board of Health), I have spent at least 20 hours researching this question. That research indicates overwhelmingly that fluoridation is both safe and effective. The evidence totally con- tradicts the anti-fluoride information given to the general public through your newspaper, To make an informed opinion, looking at both sides of the issue without prejudging either, would take at least six to eight hours reading and checking of sources. How many people voting in a referendum could be expected to do the research necessary to become informed? ‘Who supports fluoridation? The Canadian and American Medical Associations, the Canadian and American Dental Associations, the B.C. Ministry of Health, and the Consumers Union (authors of Con- sumer Report magazine). Who opposes fluoridation? An interesting body in the U.S. called the National Health Federation. Between 1957 and 1963, National Health Federa- tion officials received fines and prison sentences for making false medical claims on dietary products. Besides fluoridation, the NHF opposes smallpox vaccination, polio vaccination, and pasteurization of milk. The U.S, Food and Drug Administration’s 1963 report on the NHF states, ‘‘The federation has been a front for promoters of unproven remedies, ec- centric theories, and quackery.’’ A 1973 update reaf- firmed the statement, The NHP’s stated purpose, according to the FDA report is to promote ‘‘freedom of choice’’ in health matters. Mrs. Brorup asks council to come to a deci- sion based on ‘‘freedom of choice’. Other materials I have researched show that fluoridation has been refused or repealed based on this ‘‘freedom of choice’’ argument, supplemented by unfounded cancer scares, birth defect scares and Is are elected to lead mutation scares, No study quoted by the anti-fluoride group has yet stood up to impartial scientific review, and all have shown preconceived bias and ignored relevant factors such as age, race, heredity, and environment. No responsible council can afford to jeopardize the proven beneficial effects of water fluoridation by risking a public referendum where voters may be [| swayed by an inundation of misinformation. Councils are elected to lead, not to back away from responsibility by giving contentious issues (or non-issues) back to the people who elected them. The illusion of scientific controversy surrounding fluoridation is such an issue, and in my view nothing more than an illusion. I would ask your newspaper to consider all the evidence and to take a stand on fluoridation. I am confident that impartial research will support my position, and that this illusion of scientific controver- sy can be put to rest. I also strongly urge the Kitimat council to recon- sider their decision to hold a referendum and to take on:-the role for which they were elected, making a stand for the benefit of the community. .
