CCW demands
banning of all
nuclear tests

Prohibition of all nuclear bomb
tests was called for by delegates
attending the B.C. annual meeting
of the Congress of Canadian Wo-
men at Swedish Community Hall
here last Saturday.

Letters are being sent by the
CCW to the governments of Can-
ada and the United States demand-
ing that all tests be stopped im-
mediately. ©

Mrs. Doris Hartley, president
of the B.C. Council of the CCW,

gave a report on the past year’s
activities. This was followed by
chapter reports and discussion.

Mrs. Ellen Neel, guest speaker,
gave a talk on the living habits
and culture of Native Indians over
the past century. An authority
on ther subject, Mrs. Neel is an
active worker in the struggle to
preserve and revive Native In-
dian cultures.

“Many of the problems of my !
people could be overcome if Na-
tive Indians were granted equal
citizenship with other Cana-
dians,” said Mrs. Neel. “At the
present time there is only one
social service worker for the
entire province allocated to deal
with our problems.”

Former business agent Jack
Stevenson of Local 452, AFL Car-
penters Union, had his expulsion
lifted this week pertding a further
probe by international president
Maurice Hutcheson of Indianapolis.
Veteran union leader. Stevenson
was expelled April 22 by inter-
national representative Bill Page.
He was one of eight former offi-
cers expelled for alleged “com-
munist sympathies.” ,
One of the 12 rank-and-file mem-

bers expelled by Page for “con-
stitutional violations” has also

been reinstated pending further

Two expulsions lifted
‘in carpenters’ union

investigation, but his name was
not revealed.

- Fighting back against Page’s ac-
tions, union members have held
several meetings to protest the
purge, and have appealed to
Hutcheson to rectify the injustice
of expulsions without hearing or
trial.

Charges of “dictatorial tactics’”
have been hurled against Page, and
angry union members have point-
ed out that “no formal charges

were ever, laid before the local
despite the fact this is called for

by the union’s constitution.”
