WALL STREET JOURNAL The Wall Street Journal “Seriously, don’t you think this is better than accepting a Federal handout?” EDITORIAL Our ‘moment of truth’ he smashing setbacks suffered by the U.S. aggressors in South Vietnam in recent weeks confirmed the historic truth that a people, though poor in material wealth, fired with a deep national pride of homeland, independence, and freedom to run their own affairs, can not be crushed. Like predatory animals held at bay, President Johnson and his Pentagon desperados are now planning a greater escalation in Vietnam. Various figures are being tossed around of two or three hundred thousand extra troops — a million U.S. troops in Vietnam by the end of 1968 to assure a ‘‘quick end to the war’’. New weapons — all kinds of new weapons to up the kill of Vietnamese men, women and children; and over-kill if need be-by the use of nuclear weapons. And to use ‘‘the Bomb”’, if necessary, upon another Asian people in order to subject them to the ‘“‘American way of life’’ as seen through the eyes of Washington’s inhuman vultures. This, they hope to achieve with the open or silent. approval of stooge governments in other lands, including to our deep shame; Canada. The Pearson government, collectively and as individual cabinet-members, make apologetic noises about ‘‘peace’’ in Vietnam, ‘‘deplore’’ U.S. escalation, etc., meantime welcoming the fat profits that come to Canada for the sale of Canadian-made arms to the U.S. with ‘which to kill Vietnamese women and children. For all peace-loving Canadians already greatly disturbed by our involvement in Vietnam through military alliances in NATO and NORAD, and our weasel apologetics for the actions of the Yankee vultures, further U.S. escalation in Vietnarm, nearing the brink of a world nuclear war, becomes an increasingly grave eventuality for the Canadian people. Nor does the present entrants in the Liberal leadership race provide any great hope for a change. Those now contending for the Pearson leadership mantle, almost to a man, have long demonstrated themselves as government ‘‘yes men’’, ready at all times to subordinate Canada’s basic interests and peace to the dictates of Yankee imperialism. Let the Liberal leadership convention choose whichever U.S. stooge it may, the Canadian people, if they value the peace and survival that comes with independence, wilJ repudiate that choice at the next general election. Peace will come to Vietnam when the U.S. aggressors stop the killing and destruction, and the U.S. aggressors will only stay their bloody hands when countries like Canada, its people and government cast aside the role of a pliable, apologetic stooge, cancel out its war alliances, commitments, contracts, etc., and boldly declare for Peace _ in Vietnam Now! The National Mobilization to End the War in Vietnam, sponsored by - U.S. and Canadian peace forces for a week of local and regional protests and demonstrations, April 21-30, and in Vancouver for the weekend of April 27-28, must mark a new high in the struggle for peace. | West Coast edition, Canadian Tribune®: Editor—TOM McEWEN Published weekly at Ford Bldg., Mezzanine No. 3, 193 E. RANKIN © The new civic political party calling itself The Electors Action Movement (TEAM) is no grass roots reform movement. It’s the creation of the Establishment, of the corporate interests which control City Hall. TEAM leaders worked closely with the NPA in secret meetings preceding the public appearance of TEAM and have continued to do so since. In fact TEAM is the NPA with a new look, after having undergone a face lifting, receiving a transfusion of new blood and dressing up in a new spring outfit. But underneath it’s. still the same old hag. A look at TEAM’s sponsors and backers provides convincing evidence as to its purpose and policies. These include a former president of the B.C. Electric, a former chairman of MacMillan and Bloedel, and an investment counsellor. It has the obvious support of Pacific Press, which publishes both the Sun and Province. Can the homeowner, working man or ordinary citizen expect anything good from this source? An assortment ‘of. individuals including a few labor leaders and professional people have been TEAM: included for window dressing. Their presence does not change the essential nature of TEAM as The ' Establishment Action Movement. Those who have been taken in by TEAM or are toying with the idea of being included would do well to For those who want genuine reforms the ‘only real alternative to the NPA—TEAM is a coalition of progressive forces around a common program and slate of candidates, says Rankin. remember the old Indian proverb: “Any man (or woman) who sleeps with dogs will wake up with fleas.” Why did the Establishment organize TEAM at this particular time? One reason appears to be dissatisfaction with an NPA Cvuncil that is not solidly united behind schemes such as Block 42-52 and a waterfront freeway. A second reason, I believe, is the upsurge of public protest against an NPA dominated City Council because of its action supporting the sellout. to the Block 42-52 interests, its plans for expensive freeways, its The Establishment e Action Movement tax concessions to big corporations, and its lack of action on vital issues like housing and taxes on homes. The revival of labor and NDP activity in civic affairs is also 4 threat to the NPA. The Hstablishment fears that the NPA © may be on the way out and that now is the time to test a new civic political party which will perpetuate corporate control at City Hall. Provincial politics are involved too. TEAM is completely under the control of the Liberal Party, whichis working hard to become the alternative to a Social Credit government that appears to be in real political trouble. A pre-requisite - for the Liberals is the establishment of a strong base in Greater Vancouver and outflanking the NDP. TEAM may well be designed to do this. For those who want genuine reforms in the interests of the people, the only real alternative to the NPA-TEAM grouping is 4 coalition of all the progressive forces — labor, ratepayers, NDP, and community groups, united around a common program and slate of. candidates. The organization of TEAM now makes this a vital necessity. HOMEOWNERS INDIGNANT CPR behind Arbutus grab The CPR was accused of being behind the multi-million dollar move to set up a huge commercial complex of stores in the heart of a large family-dwelling area in the Arbutus district of Vancouver. The accusation came at a giant rally Monday night in Prince of Wales school which attracted more than 1,800 residents. The meeting, called by City Council to consider rezoning the area, lasted some five hours and had 60 delegations before it. Only about 20 had a chance to be heard. City Council is expected to debate the issue this week. The 38 acre site is owned by the CPR. It is one of the railway company’s many properties in ‘the city. The application for the building of the complex was made by Dominion Construction Company, with Woodward’s and Simpsons- Sears involved in the consortium. Representatives of the Arbutus- Quilchena Homeowners’ Assoc., told the giant rally that when residents built their homes they were assured by the city that it would remain a a or atreene £r e274 4 odae Loe 04 a weelaw JESS alo", & single family district. They charged that the city would be guilty of a breach of faith if it allowed the rezoning. Other speakers charged that although the CPR’s name does \not appear on the application, that it is the prime mover. Here is another example of how the CPR, together with other large corporations, is seeking to ride roughshod over homeowners needs in order to profitably (for themselves, that is) develop lands held in the city by CPR. ir cre ne or pene ate
