Terrace soccer teams great in Victoria The Terrace Tilden Tigers and Wilkinson Cannons accounted for an overall total of three wins, two losses and three ties at the first annual Canada Safeway mini-soccer tour- ‘nament at Vancouver on the Jan. 3 weekend. The Terrace Youth Soc- cer teams surprised their - Vancouver hosts by show- ing comparable talent against. all their . op- ponents. In the under-7 division, the Cannons posted two wins and two ties in their four contests. On the final day of action, the Can- nons got a two-goal per- formance from Jason Brown as they blanked Lynn Valley Condors 2-0. Brown actually scored all of his team’s goals during the three-day series. _ Later on the final day, Cannons played River Road Rabbits to a scoreless tie. On their last day of ac- tion in the under-9 divi- sion, Tilden Tigers were involved in a pair of 1-0 decisions. They shutout Killarney Black Panthers on a goal by Michael Davis, and lost 1-0 to River Road Rammers on a last minute goal. Tigers had one win, two losses and one tie. Both teams’ coaches had high praise for the play of their lads. Goalies - Travis Lamming and Mike Cooper were especially lauded for consistently outstanding play. It took a goal with less than two minutes to go for Wesburn Whitecaps to edge the Tigers 1-0 in their first game. Goalie Mike Cooper had an outstan-. ding game in net for Ter- race. The Tigers came back from the opening loss to hold North Richmond United to a scoreless tie. Once again it was . Cooper’s stalwart job in goal that held Richmond off the scoresheet, Wilkinson Cannons picked up a double shutout job against Wesburn Wanderers in their first match. Travis Lamming held off ’ numerous shots to record his end of the 0-0 game in a the Terrace goal. Against Ed monds '- Grasshoppers in game 2, the Cannons came up with a 2-1. victory. Jason Brown scored once in the first minute, then netted the clincher with one minute left after Edmonds had tied it up midway through the game. Lamming was outstan- ding once again, with a diving stop on a breakaway late in the game as his best effort. Each game consisted of two 12-minute halves with a three-minute halftime break. It was seven-a-side competition due to the smaller-sized field (at B.C. Place Stadium, they played three games at a time, using cross-field pit- ches), _ Rules and regulations included’ the stipulation that each player on} the 12-man roster had to iplay a minimum of 50 percent ‘of the game, in all games. To determine final stan- dings for each team, organizers used a color system. Here’s how it operated. Teams in each of the four five-team groups had a different color designation, Terrace teams were white, along with three other teams from groups within their division, Essentially, points gathered by all the white teams were tabulated together just like other colors for other teams. In the Wilkinson Cannons division, they amassed enough points for a second-place finish overall, As for the Tilden Tigers, they gathered enough to place third overall for their age group. . Points awarded were. two for a win and one for a tie. At the awards cere- monies following the games, each player picked up a badge, a button, a crest, and posters. Organizers determined it was an outstanding suc- cess and will very likely be repeated next year. x\ ., KRESS eas xe 3; oo ae wy So st “_.
