Northwest sights showcased
for cruise ship passengers

THE WEATHER was bad
but the end result was
good as northwest busi-
nesses played host to
cruise ship passengers in
Prince Rupert May 28.

The one-day visit by
approximately 500 people
on board the Radisson
Seven Seas Mariner tested
preparations for the coastal
city’s expectation of a bur-
geoning cruise industry
once a massive $9 million
dock is completed.

“Despite the weather I
think things went wonder-
fully well,” said George
Clark of Elan Travel who
mounted several high-end
tours,

“We were sold out on a
trip to a fishing lodge on
floats but the plane
couldn’t take off because
of the weather.”

“On an in-land tour, it
absolutely bucketed with
rain but the people were so
excited with the spectacu-
lar scenery, it didn’t bother
them a bit,” said Clark.

Another tour resulted in
people catching fish which
mare than compensated for
the rain, he added.

“IT must say the people
at Prince Rupert did well.
There were ambassadors
aut to greet passengers and
they were very warm and
welcoming,” Clark ‘can-
tinued, ,

Because there is no
dock large enough to serv-
ice larger cruise ships, the
Seven Seas Mariner sta-
tioned itself in the Prince
Rupert harbour and pas-
sengers were taken ashore
in small craft.

The Seven Seas Mariner
is the largest of the test
stops this year at Prince
Rupert.

On July 25, The World,

a 300-passenger ship be-
longing to ResidenSeas
Cruises, docks for an over-
night stay. It returns Aug.
I] for a day-long stop.

The World is an ultra
high-end ship containing
condominium-style ac-
commadations sold for
prices reaching $3 million,
US.

Much smaller cruise
ships, which can tie up at
Prince Rupert docks, will
also be stopping over the
course of the summer sea-
son,

It’s those large - ships
Prince Rupert has its eyes
on once the large dock is
completed by next year.

to pick up the Prince Ru-

the closure of the pulp mill
there and the decline of
the commercial fishing in-

to promote oi! and gas exploration in northwestern B.C.

Economic development officers from each town are
assembling a brochure to highlight the potential of on-
shore oil and gas development — notably in what geolo-
gists call the Bowser Basin, underground formations
north of here which contain potentially lucrative finds,

Brian Baker of the Terrace Economic Development
Authority said the Bowser is an attractive area but one
that has not yet pot the high profile of efforts to open up
offshore oil drilling.
