Aé - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, Apri! 4, 2001 Wrong message sent by the U2 trip contest Dear Sir: Why is it that as a log- ging community we allow our radio station to give away free tickets promot- ing the next U2 rock con- cert in Vancouver? If you are unaware, the group U2 has just joined forces with environmental- ists to ban logging in the Great Bear Rainforest on British Columbia’s coast. The band is using the Vancouver concert to bring awareness to people around the world to help stop logging in our area. How can we continue to allow people from outside our communities who, by the way, have never seen the huge measures forest companies go through to CORRESPONDENCE FOR THE TERRACE STANDARD The Mail Bag ensure environmentally sound logging practices and who probably haven't even been north of Van- couver, to promote the false pretenses of logging. We need to educate our younger generations who listen to these groups that our logging practices are environmentally sound and are among the best in the world, We also need to stress to our youth, who will soon be regular wage earners, that we need well paying jobs and a strong economy to support education and health services. That is what our media should be promoting. We need to stand up for our jobs or they could be lost forever. If our loggers and sawmillers wind up out of work, our whole community and local busi- nesses will suffer. I know i won’t be able to advertise or pay for cable then. Silvana Rigsby, Terrace, B.C. Nurses seek support to reach a contract Dear Sir: B.C.'s registered nurses are without a contract as of March 31. Your local nurses at Mills Memorial Hospital, Terraceview Lodge, and the North West Health Unit will all be taking a strike vote today. Qur demands are sim- ple: We want ta be paid what we are worth. Our employer, the Health Employers’ Asso- ciation of B.C., however, is refusing to give us a wage offer, and is propos- ing to decrease our holiday time and other benefits - despite the critical nursing shortage and exhausting working conditions of many nurses. The registered nurses and registered psychiatric nurses in this community have belween three and seven years of specialized education, and are conti- nually updating our know- ledge and skills. We carry a preat deal of responsibility in our daily work, and have high standards of practice. It is unlikely that any of us en- tered the profession for the money, In fact, until 10 or 15 years ago, it was extreme- We've got the Dear Sir: Regarding the softwood lumber agreement, it’s time to say, “enough is enough” to this small graup that wants to walk all over use Ss | My understanding is that we have proven over and over again that we're not subsidized in our forest industry, yet they continue to whine. Well, it’s time ta stand up and say, “No more”. We have the power (you know what I mean). They need us as much as we need them. Look at what we have. We’re just WNL, whiner, too nice — giving it all away. Remember, we're Ca- nadians. We know more about the United States than they know about us; ', but the one. thing they do know is that we are friend- ly, reasonable people wha hate confrontation. Therefore, we need someone to stand up and say, “No more, This is the way itis going to be. We Canadians are not going to take this from you anymore.” What are they going ta do, nuke us?. Invade us? I'm assuming Ms. Smith's figures are reasonably correct. Considering that our LRMP area had over 18 per cent of its land set aside for protection even be- fore our LRMP table started choosing its own protec- ted areas, I feel our local representatives were being pretly generous to add any more protected land at all, even 0.36 per ceni. Now Ms. Smith tells us it’s not nearly enough, that some plan members want to add another three per cent, and that unidenlified global demands want even more. It appears she approves of all these demands and more. a There is no limit to the amount of land preserva- tionists want protected. They want it all. We cannot allaw such people to be arbiters of land policy or for- est policy, because they are simply out to destroy our economy and our civilization. Huge areas were withdrawn from the resource economy by our government in a series of closed meetings with Greenpeace and other protectionist groups — people like Ms. Smith. The public was al- lowed no say in the matter. The secret deals made at that time have not been made public, but are supposed to have involved poli- tical support for the government and a stop to envir- onmental groups instigating foreign countries to boy- cott our forest products for awhile at least. It didn’t last for long. The protectionists took their winnings and yelled for more. The threat of boycott is still being brandished. ; The Smith article talks as if there is an indepen- dent global demand for protection of B.C.’s coastal forests. But the truth is that those foreign countries don’t know anything about our coastal logging prac- tices except what international environmental groups like Sierra Club tell them. ; Environmental groups in general have a mainly urban support base made up of people who do not un- derstand rural cuiture or forest economics, they do. not log, and so have limited knowledge of current forestry practices. They seldom.set foot in the woods, so they know little of forest ecology, an area in which they profess expertise. They hate loggers because loggers cut down the nice trees, and they’d like to starve them and their fa- milies out of the country. so they seek to instigate boycoits of our lumber and withdrawal of the timber supply into protected areas. Who gave these groups this kind of power? Why is our government not charging them with restraint of trade, with conveying false information to cause boy- cotts, and with economic sabotage?
