B14 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, November 12, 1997 SHAMES Ex-Olympian brings a mountain of ideas New manager keys on backcouniry, snowboards and even toboggans By DAVE TAYLOR YOU AREN’T likely to find the new Shames Mountain manager tucked away in his office much this winter. Th» odds are you'll find him on the slopes, talking to snowboar- ders and skiers, or chasing those who are leaving beforc the end of the day lo find out exactly why. ‘We need to know more about our skiers,” says Farvig. ‘‘We need to know how many are from Terrace and how many from Kitimat. We have to listen to them and find out what we're doing right and whal we're doing wrong.”’ This is Farwig’s first year as manager and he’s the third one in as many years. ‘‘That’s preity tough on a com- pany,” he notes. But while smaller ski hills are folding all over North America, Farwig says that’s nol going to happen here if he has anything to say about it, Sports Scope BC Games registers Born in Bolivia and educated in Europe, Farwig himself is a former Olympic downhill skier, so he knows the sport inside out. He also knows the management side, hav- ing mun Marmot Basin and Nakiska -- sile of the 1988 Olympic Games — for many years, “We need things like ben- ches at the top of runs for snowboarders to sit on.” Now Farwig says be’s at a point in his life where he doesn’t have to work 12 months of the year, so he’s turned his efforts to working with ski hills that are in trouble. Shames is one of those hills. But Farwig says our hill has plenty to offer including some things that other hills can only dream about, ‘“Shames has access to in- credible backcountry,'’ he says. “There is a market for this back- country. The question is, how do we introduce it?” One thing Farwig is considering is a pilot program for cat skiing. Skiers interested in the back- country would pay a nominal fee above the price of a lift pass and they could ride a snow cat instead of having to hike. Another plan that’s new this year is a supervised toboggan park, Far- wig points out that Shames gets so much snow, it could become a real *‘snow play area’” with all kinds of activities to get more people up on the mountain. Farwig says if the toboggan park goes well, he can also envision a dedicated run for inner-tubers in the future, with sloped turns like a waterslide. Another change this year related to the “‘snow play area’’ theme is improved snowbaard services, *“We need things like benches at the top of runs for snowboarders io sit on,” he says. ““And we need a dedicated area for them where a grooming machine can keep up with the snow — you can’t do it with a shovel.’’ Other new plans for this year in- clude barbeques .at the top of the T-bar, snow bars and improve- meats in the day lodge. Seasons passes are still available for Shames. Farwig says the hill should open at the end of Novem- ber or the beginning of December, There’s a new wall to climb A NEW CLIMBING wall in Kitimat is providing another place for north- westerners to get an indoor taste of the vertical world. The first phase of the new climbing gym Is located at Riverlodge in a former racquetball court there. It features a wall 10 Feet high and 40 feet long with a chal- lenging 16-foot eight-degree incline. The wall will provide a safe place for beginners to try out the sport of rock climbing and gain experience.
