Nass police boosted THE NEWEST MEMBER of the New Aiyansh RCMP detachment is expected very soon in the Nass Valley, The arrival of Constable Paul Thalhofer, now posted at Lac la Marte in the Northwest Teritorics, will boost the delachment strength to four officers. “He’s sure going to be ap- preciated. We’re turning into a busy little place,’? detach- ment officer in charge Corpo- ral Ron Sharein said Jast week. Thalofer’s position comes as a result of a policing agree- ment signed late last year be- tween the Nisga’a Tribal Council and the federal and provincial governments. That program Js intended to place RCMP officers in close co-operation wilh the com- munities they serve, The positions were created wilh the expectation of being staffed by native RCMP of- ficers, Thalhofer isn't native but was selected for the position after no native officers de- cided to bid for the position, Under the agreement, the federa] governments pays 52 per cent of the cost and the provincial government 48 per cent of the cost. That’s the standard cost- sharing agreement now in place in the province to cover policing in rural areas. The policing agreement also covers the cost a native of- ficer already posted to the New Aiyansh detachment, The agrecment covering the two officers is for four years at $238,251 a year covering wages, benefits, equipment, training and overhead. Exploration dollar figure not yet known up here THE NORTHWEST will con- linue to lead the province this year in mining exploration ex- penditures, says a mines ministry geologist. But it’s still a bit carly to pre- dict how much activity there'll be, said Paul Wojdak who is based in Smithers. In 1994 northwest expenditures accounted for half of the $100 million spent in B.C, And the northwest amount of $50 million registered ag the third successive year of significant in- creases, A large chunk of the northwest Moncy was spent on the Red Mountain gold property near Stewart, Continued work on that proper- ty is in doubt as owners Barrick Gold remain undecided as to its future, Barrick Gold acquired the prop- erty late last year when it took ’ over Lac Minerals, Barrick Gold then tried unsuccessfully to sell the property and is looking for a joint venture partner, One measure of activity may not lie in dollars spent but on how many pyojecis there are, said Wojdak, - **The number of projects could tise,”’ he added. Another measure lies in the mmber of projects which have yassed from initial exploration and development into obtaining various environmental and other approvals. Topping Wojdak's list here is the Redfern Resources Tulsequah Chief gold, copper and zinc prop- erty in the far northwestem por- tion of the pravince. “They’re now moving into how solvable the issues are,'’ said Wojdak, He expects permitting to be a complex process because of wild- life issues involving federal, provincial and Alaskan govern- ment agencies. Another bright mining point was the opening of the Homestake’s Prime Resources Eskay Creck gold mine. That stemmed from a massive exploration effort in the late 1980s, “Tt helps when a mine opens. It sparks continuing interest,’’ said Wojdak. Continued work is expected at Cominco’s Snip gold mine in the Iskut Valley, And Westmin will further its ef- forts to sign contracts to process ore from other mines at its Premier mine site near Stewart. Westmin also wants to develop a small gold property on Porcher Island, off the coast of Prince Rupert. Last year there were 30 projects weighing in with expenditures in excess of $200,000 cach. Provincial govermment as- sistance with exploration grants and assistance to prospectors has helped stimulate activity. CRIME STOPPERS @ 635-TIPS Community Classes will be: Eby Street.
