have discovered that I read
a great deal and I] am an
atheist.

Your view that people’

were being arrested for
praying on the street is in-
correct. You were banned
from harassing women who
wished to. attend a
women’s health clinic,
The government never
banned smoking anywhere,
including homes and work-
places. The Worker’s
Compensation Board ban-
ned smoking in the work
place to protect workers,
who may or may not

smoke; from second hand -
smoke, as a health mea-'

sure.

If my reading of history”

is correct, Jesus was a Jew
who lived in a Jewish
community and had a dis-
agreement with the hierar-
chy or the Jewish Church
of that day.

I see that bastion of de-
mocracy, the Liberal Party
of Canada, has done it
again.

We learned recently
about Vancouver Centre
MP Hedy Fry blaming Al-
liange MP Reed Elley for
an-‘increased rate of sui-
cide among homosexuals.

Ostensibly, Mz, Elley’s

remarks about radical fe-
minist movements of the
60s spawning gay activism
have caused the self-es-
teem of gays throughout
the land to be lowered.

In fact, Elley’s observa-

tions are either true or a :

remarkable coincidence.

Nonetheless, and suffi-
ciently armed with their
righteous indignation, the
Liberals can ram another
bill through which grants
hitherto unheard of rights
to a minority special inter-
est group.

Once again the federal
Liberals have demonstra-
ted their propensity toward
abandoning democratic
principles and distorting
truth,

Just doing its job

Dear Sir:

While I can understand and sympathize with Debra
Stokes’ frustration in not being able to reregister her
child in her neighbourhood school, (letter to the editor,
Apr. 26, 2000) it is not true that the “teachers’ union and
all its power” is to blame.

As a long time teacher in Terrace, ] have often repre-
sented my colleagues in the’ role -of staff’ rep. In each
succeeding year I have.been proud of.the integrity of the
people who are my union leaders and the countless hours
of hard work that they do to benefit its members and
education in general throughout this district.

There is nothing “suspicious” about.this..The strength
of the union comes from the support of the membership
who are given every opportunity to air opinions and vote
in all issues. The Terrace and District Teachers’ Union

(TDTU). does represent its members - wthe. teachers are

the union.

The priority of the TDTU has always been ta ensure
quality learning conditions in this district and in several
instances has had to fight hard to win them.

One factor of good learning conditions is smaller
class sizes and when classes are being set, the number
of special needs children is a factar in determining those
classes. However, very few special needs children are
provided with full time aides.

If the union is to blame for anything, it is its conti-
nued insistence that the contract obligations be followed
consistently and fairly and that they apply to everyone.
Ms. Stokes, I’m sure you can appreciate the value of
this.
