Bi4 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, December 23, 1997 Cal just warming up says coach WHAT DOES Cal basket- bali coach Cam Mackay think of the Kermodes first game this season against Prince Rupert? “T think we got shel- lacked.”? ° And what does he foresee in Cal’s remaining four ° games against that number two ranked AA club? “7’m looking forward to “them, It’s going to be very interesting.”’ Hunh? Iv’s true, In spite of the Kermode’s dismal 25-point home loss to the Hurricanes two weekends ago, Mackay says he can’t wait to play Prince Rupert again. “They’re ahead of their game,’’ he says. “‘Rupert’s in mid-season form. But we'll close the gap.”’ Mackay says he actually wasn’t pleased with the Kermodes play during most of their Kermode Classic Toumament, cven when they won. “They were a little com- placent. And they were ex- hausted,’”? he says. ‘Even on Friday I wasn’t happy with their play — they just didn’t click.” Mackay blames his coach- ing for some of that inability to ‘‘click’’. He says he was too busy putting together the tournament and doing fund- raising to coach as well as he would have liked. But in spite of the Kermodes not quite coming together, Mackay says several players performed quite well, ; ‘My best players were my bench players,”’ he says. “Dave Fleming was fantas- tic. Mike Hovanes and Clint Shepherd are fierce compe- titors. They’re not some of the highest-skilled out there but they're some of the best competition.” Last weekend Caledonia was in Prince George for the Duchess Park Condor Christmas Tournament, Mackay says he hoped to have boosted the Kermodes’ intensity for the event, One of the teams there, O'Grady, is ranked eighth in the provincial A rankings. Mackay says they play a quick game similar to Rupert, so it was a good op- portunity for Cal to improve their speed and defense. Shames open for season LET IT SNOW, let it snow. Shames Mountain is final- ly open for the season thanks to a big dump of glorious powder. As of Saturday, the mountain had an 80cm base, with 150cm at mid- mountain and 180cm at the top of the T-Bar. And just in time, too. Reports of skiers and snow- boarders going into sudden convulsions due to snow withdrawal syndrome were starting to come in from around the northwest. While there are more and more of those snowboarders ou the slopes every year, recent figures from the Ca- nadian Ski Council show - that the sport is still most popular with the younger, mate crowd. Some 80 per cent of riders are single and two-thirds are” male. More thant half are be- tween 12 and 24 years old ‘Skiing, meanwhile, is more evenly split between the sexes and nearly 40 per cent are martied. The aver- age of active sklers over 12- years-old is 25. Snowboarders tend to be more active, though. Nearly 50 per cent of them hit the slopes 2-3 times per month, Only 25 per cent of skiers ; go that often. Snowboarders still have some catching up to do, however, While 14 per.cent of Canadians over the age of 12 say they have skied, just four per. cent have snow- boarded, a ae Sport Scope Boarders get Big Air IT’S SNOWING at Shames Mountain, and staff is get- ting ready to host their Big Air and Boardercross events coming up the first weekend in January.
