What is required to “eontrol”’ inflation where foodstuffs are concerned is not the hounding of labor, but a government Prices Review Board which would exercise some control over unconscionable profit- eering on the part of food mono- polies such as Weston, Kelly Douglas and their ilk. Tribune VOL. 33, No. 20 SOFT 50 See Stop Nixon’s mad gamble with world nuclear war An urgent appeal to all Canadians to act now to compel Ottawa to press U.S. President Richard Nixon to end his reckless gamble with our lives and world peace was made this week. : The appeal, headed “Canada Must Act Before It Is Too Late,” came from the Central Executive of the Communist Party of Canada. Signed by William Kashtan, general secretary, the appeal said: | We urgently address this Appeal to the trade unions, the farm organizations, the NDP, youth and student movements, women’s organizations, professional and academic associa- tions — to act now to compel the Government of Canada.-to call upon President Nixon to stop his reckless gamble with world peace. The more recent illegal escalation by the U.S. Government of its undeclared war against the Democratic Republic of Vietnam provides more than enough proof that U.S. imperialism seeks a military solution and, not a political settlement — of its aggressive war in Vietnam. The laying of mines in the waters adjacent to the ports and harbors of the DRV, and the air and naval blockade of that country constitute a flagrant violation of international law in a criminal attempt to widen the front of direct involvement of other states in the Vietnam war. In a world armed to the teeth with a nuclear overkill of many times over, this cynical international provocation by President Nixon brought mankind right up to the brink of world war three. Only the steady nerves and good sense of the staunch friends of the Vietnamese people, particularly the Soviet Union, have, for the moment, saved the day.. While the world totters on the brink, Prime Minister Trudeau continues to excuse Nixon’s mad gamble with world war, and the Government and Parliament sit on their collective hands and refuse to condemn Nixon’s criminal acts. This official stance must be changed. In the name of world peace and security, we appeal to all Canadians of goodwill who cherish life over death, peace over war to put a stop to this insanity before it is too late. We ask you to deluge the Prime Minister and his Govern- ment, the Leader of the Opposition and Parliament with telegrams, letters and petitions demanding that the Govern- ment and Parliament call upon President Nixon, the U.S. Government and Congress to Stop the Bombing, Lift the Blockade, Return to the Peace Talks, and Get Out of Vietnam.
