B12 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, April 15, 1998 Drivers tackle steep terrain at hill climb A LARGE crowd tumed out for the annual Shames Mtn, Kilt Climb two weekends ago. And they weren't dis- appointed as they watched compelitors scream = up 3,000 feet of vertical in their extreme machines. The Beedle and Griffith families along with several other volunteers spent all day Saturday hiking up and down the run setting the course — a job well done. The course had to be tough but it also had to be safe to avoid hazards such as Spring melt holes and protruding stumps. In the end, the course wound its way through a rough and tumble series of moguls at about a 45-70 de- gree angle. A few racers came from out-of-town for the event bul most were local riders. There were a total of 162 entrees in all classes: from Stock, Improved Stock, Trail Mod, Modified, Kids, Ladies, Stock King, Im- proved King and Mod King. Local racer Norm Hebert put on quite an impressive show, taking first place in Stack 800cc, Improved 700, Stock King, Improved Stock King, Mod King and third in Improved 800. He also clocked the fastest time of 45.66 seconds. Hebert is hardly a new- comer to the sport of snow- mobile racing. He was B.C. points champion for two years running and placed third in Stock class at this year’s Jackson Hole World Championships back in March. _ Organizers of the event would like io thank Shames Mtn, it’s staff, sponsors and all the hill helpers who worked so hard to put this event together.
