With that theme in mind, a “cleanup committee’ under. the auspices of the Terrace Beauti- ere ee ee err fication Society has been struck |....° and is now in the process of developing this year’s Cleanup Campaign. i - The 1989 project will begin on April 30 with the annual Gar- bathon, Terrace residents are in- vited. to take part in the after- noon activity, which will start at’ 2 p.m. from McDonald’s. -The cleanup committee is encourag- ing participation from all sectors of the community. The concept sees the development of teams which hit city streets picking up litter. The goal for each team ‘is to pick up the most garbage. The committee, with the assistance of the Terrace Chamber of Commerce, will-make a special effort to recruit local business teams. Various prizes will be awarded at the end of the hour- ‘Jong event, and free litter bags will be provided. “Plans are currently being ‘developed to include district schools in a cleanup competi- tion. The Cleanup Committee ‘expects to release more details in the coming days. -. The committee is particularly excited about a new venture this year: community entering the contest. Entries will be judged on how litter-free streets and yards are kept. Judging for this event will take. placé on Sunday, May 7 with prizes awarded to each resi- dent of the block. The commit- tee encourages neighborhood blocks to enter by Saturday, May 6. Entries may be picked up and submitted at Canada Safeway or the Chamber of Commerce office. For the first time, this year’s cleanup project will be held in conjunction with the ‘‘Pitch-in 89”? provincial campaign, which will be held May 1-7. Coinciding with the week will be the City of Terrace’s annual free garbage pickup. Every year at this time we ar all concerned with the amount of litter on city and area streets: This campaign gives each of us the opportunity to pitch in and make Terrace as beautifu! as it should be. The society held its annual general meeting recently, and spokesman George Clark said a number of projects were sug- gested to improve the city’s ap- pearance. Among those was a proposal to establish flower planters along Lakelse Ave., © possibly by offering to affix plaques on each planter bearing the name of the donor, similar to the litter basket scheme that was successful last year. Clark said the society would also like to undertake tree plant- ing projects.in some of Terrace’s public areas. Concern was ex- pressed about the utilitarian ap- pearance of the embankments under the Sande Overpass, and Clark said one member sug- gested setting up bulb donation bins at local garden shops in order to eventually cover the em- bankments with flowers. Clark said interest in the so- ciety is still steady, with regular membership between 12 and 14 " people. : Ariyone with an idea for mak- ing Terrace look better is wel- come to contact George Clark at Terrace Travelh eet ee pian TT Me gia A age Ue! pap snaps adh icientet rar as eit nninnia ener a eee See eT . “FE will both lay me down: in:peace, and sleep: for thou, Lord, only maketh medwellinsafety."~ .
