It replaces one installed in 1979 to serve points west which broke open in June during the high water period on the river. The new pipeline will be 2,800 feet long, and connect the main lirie to the line that serves Prince Rupert and Port Edward. “It failed because it came ex- posed during the flood and began vibrating in the water, rupturing itself by the welds,” explained Pacific Northern Gas engineering manager John Craig. The new pipeline is being Placed down 50 feet, a lot further — and safer — than the 15-foot level of the old one. ‘We don’t want this (a rupture) to happen again and it is done so for environmental reasons,”’ said Craig. The new pipeline is 8.625 in- ches long, the same size as the former one. Work began on the highway side of the river near the Salvus highway maintenance camp by drilling down to the required depth. Drillers passed through a layer of gravel before reaching sand. They don’t actually drill horizontally through the sand, but push through drilling mud at 700 & feet per square inch of pressure to create an opening.
