REGION SUPPORTS COOKBOOK PROJECT By FRANK WALL Regional Education Director The International Wood- workers of America Region No. 1, has long been recognized as a progressive group of people. The unions efforts on behalf of its membership has ~ often called to the attention of the community the vitality and dedication of its people. The role played in the industrial re- lations field is of course, the area which receives the most attention by the news media. This is as to be expected, when one looks at the economic base of this province and sees the magnitude of the wood- working industry. An area like this that has such an impact on the lives of the people in this province is bound to receive constant attention from the media. , What fails to receive the at- tention deserved, are the many areas of involvement by our locals and members in com- munity projects of one concern or another. Areas of involve- ment that show that our union, the I.W.A., does give con- sideration, show concern and does get involved in helping people in the community, whether they be members of our union or never have had any association with any union whatsoever. Your Regional Council did get involved in assisting the patients of G. F. Strong’s Re- habilitation Centre and have worked towards helping the staff and patients of that centre to publish and print a cook- book. This was a fund raising pro- ject thought up by the patients themselves in order to provide them with some funds for the many programs they try to ac- complish, in order to make life a little more pleasant for the handicapped person. ‘ When our organization was. approached to assist in this project the Regional Officers upon examination of the pro- — ject thought it such a good idea eee soe _ CONVENTION POSTPONED gis Saskatchewan Federation of Labour has postponed its Annual Convention until October 21-23 because of the — ! day of protest. It was to have been held October 14- they agreed to lend what as- sistance they could. As a result of the Region’s efforts the cookbook is a reality and a credit to all involved in its pro- duction. We should be proud of our in- volvement in this project it is a credit to our organization. The G. F. Strong Rehabilita- tion Centre is located at 4255 Laurel Street, Vancouver, a block from Oak Street. At the presentation ceremonies, Brother Pat Kerr and myself were introduced to members of the staff of the Centre also the patients and Committees. Two of our members, one from Local 1-363 and one from Local 1-71 serve on the Committee and were particularly pleased with involvement of their union. The tour of the Centre was conducted by Mr. Sid Lloyd. He showed Brother Kerr and myself the many facilities of the Centre. The many special- ized services provided to meet the needs of people with severe disabilities. Spinal cord in- juries, amputations, head injuries, paraplegia and quad- riplegia, Parkinson’s Disease, Multiple sclerosis, toname just a few. The services of the Centre receives invaluable . support from the Women’s Auxiliary and from many other volun- teers. The cost of operating the Centre is primarily financed by the British Columbia Hospital Insurance service. A quotation appears on the front of one of the brochures put out by the Centre that goes as follows: “The goal of rehabilitation is to achieve the maximum function of the individual and to prepare him, physically, mentally, socially, vocation- ally for the fullest possible life compatible with his abilities and disabilities” Those are noble objectives - indeed. We are proud to have assisted in some small way towards their accomplish- ment, OCTOBER-NOVEMBER, 1976 ZS ) i] : Rag 4 aM. saad rte, MEMBERS OF THE ORGANIZATION COMMITTEE. C. Crouter (1-71) ROSS G.
