AUTO RATES CLIMBING IN SASKATCHEWAN The Saskatchewan Liberal government continues to un- dermine the province’s highly- valued auto insurance plan, which gives Saskatchewan residents by far the cheapest and most comprehensive cov- erage of any similar insurance in North America. The latest move to destroy the plan was noted by Allan Blakeney, MLA for Regina Centre. Mr. Blakeney went on to say, “How much a car owner pays in automobile insurance premiums depends on what expenses are charged against the Automobile Insurance Plan. Until this summer the amount charged against the plan by the government and its agencies was approved by the provincial auditor. In July an order-in-council was pass- ed giving the Government Finance Office. power to set these expenses. “This allows the cabinet to load the automobile plan with expenses which are not justi- fied, but which will give an excuse to raise rates so they will be closer to the rates of private companies.” Mr. Blakeney said that the government had given no ex- planation for this back-room tampering with proper audit- ing procedures. He predicted that motorists would soon be burdened with another in- crease in insurance rates un- der the public plan.
