TERROR IN SOUTHERN U.S. Loud demand rising for federal action The homes of eight more Negro families have been bombed in Birmingham, Alabama. Inits lead story of September 29, the U.S. Worker charged that this ‘‘cow- ardly action by racist conspir- ators against the U.S. government bared in all its starkness the in- ability or unwillingness of the local authorities to protect the lives and property of the city’s Negro citizens, much less defend _ the rights supposed to be guaran- teed to them by the Constitu- tion.’’ Continued the Worker: ‘‘The latest violent crime underscores the demand for Pres. Kennedy to send federal troops to Ala- bama made at demonstrations in many cities by hundreds of thous- ands of Negro and white Ameri- cans. It also reveals how “in- adequate was the reply of Pres- ident Kennedy to the demands of the Negro people for action by the federal government. His answer had been that the people of Birmingham could solve the present crisis alone. And his only contribution was to appoint. two white men to act as con- ciliators.’’ To show their fury at the ris- ing ae movement, sa rac- ‘Everything. in. Africa policies urges world trade unions A world-wide appeal to labor to take solidarity action with the people of South Africa in the fight against the vicious rac- ist policies of the government was launched this month by the International Trade Union Com- mittee for Solidarity With the Workers and People of South Africa. In a statement adopted by the Committee at its meeting in Accra, Ghana in August, the ap- peal to unions around the world stated: “The racist government of South Africa hasin recent months dramatically increased all re- pressive measures over the peo- ple of South Africa. 67,000 peo- ple are now in prison, huncreds of others have been deported. The Committee’s appeal to trade unions around the world states: ‘*Let us join hands and through our great strength show Verwoerd and all those who sup-, port him that the workers and peo- : ple of South Africa are not alone. They have true and genuine friends who will personally stand beside them until the day the banner of their freedom is rais- ed on high.”’ For further information and Prizewinning Film “BALLAD OF A SOLDIER” Sunday, Oct. 6, 8 p.m. Russian People’s Home 600 Campbell Ave. English Sub-titles ‘ee Workers ‘Benevolent Assn. CP club hits safety rules _ The West End Club of the Van- couver Communist Party recent- ly wrote City’Clerk R. Thompson protesting violations of public ‘safety around new construction sites in the West End. In a letter replying to the protest city building inspector D. A. Matheson defended the con- tractors as living up to the **trust’’ placed in them to carry out the work in a‘‘safe’’ manner. However, the letter admitted that the city does not have near- ly enough men to carry out an effective check on construction safety measures’’ and relies largely on the Workmen’s Com- pensation Board The city building inspector’s letter seemed satisfied that since contractors sign a clause ad- mitting public Hability when a permit is obtained that the city had nothing to concern itself about. : , The main concern expressed in the letter from the West End Club was that in recent incidents the public was endangered by lack of adequate precautions taken on many construction jobs in the city’s West End.
