Gert Whyte's SPORTLIGHT you can scratch out Earl Walls’ name as a possible successor to Rocky Marciano. In his losing battle with bulky Edgardo Ro- mero here last week the Cana- dian champ showed skill, courage and punching power, but one vital ingredient of a topnotcher was lacking — the will to fight. Walls reminded me of Ezzard Charles, who also has everything, including moxie, except a joy in practising his trade. When Walls knocked Romero glassy-eyed in the second and,the Argentine fat man grabbed and held on, it looked like the end. But when the referee separated them, Walls cautiously stabbed a few lefts while waiting for an- other opening to shoot home his lethal right. The opportunity didn’t come. In the third Romero, having de- cided there was no percentage in trying to box, wound up and threw a crushing left hook from somewhere in the Pampas. It caught Walls on the Adam’s apple and made his knees buckle. From then on he fought back hard all the way, but seemed hypnotized by Edgardo’s sweeping left, which sometimes landed low, sometimes fanned the air a foot over Walls’ head, but all too. often connected to the face, the jaw, the chest or the belly. Walls never’ backed up. He showed no fear of his foe, and kept. stalking him round after round. But whenever Romero landed his roundhouse left, with his whole 248 pounds behind it, and then started a roughhouse ~ brawl, it was evident that Walls didn’t enjoy things. It could well be that in a re- turn match Walls will find the button and knock our Romero in an early round. Romero, a chap in’ the tradition of Firpo or Ga- lento, isn’t headed for any title, anyway. He’s just a big, fighting slob with a bellyfull of guts and a murderous left. But Walls will never be a champ, either, though he seems to possess all the equipment. The thing missing is the “killer in- stinct”” — the instinctive reaction to an opponent’s momentary weakness which turns a fighter into a super-fighter for a few blazing moments. Dempsey had it. Louis had it. Marciano has it. But° guys like Charles and Walls haven’t got it. ee Walls is still the best heavy- weight Canada has seen for the past 40 years or more, But he’s never going to wear Marciano’s crown.
