While the BCFT’s president, Robert Buzza, announced in a letter to the Vancouver School Board that on the initiative of representatives of the city’s 1,600 elementary teachers a special BCTF executive meeting had been convened. Representatives of Vancouver's elementary and secondary teachers and principals met with the executive and agreed on the following statement in regard to the Vancouver South by-election: “(1) To identify and publicize education needs in Vancouver, the satisfaction of which are threatened by the school construction freeze and by the limitations which may be placed on local autonomy by the education finance provision of the Public Schools Act. (2) To persuade all candidates in the by-election to commit themselves to do everything possible to satisfy the educational need of Vancouver. (3) To seek the active support of other groups.” Vancouver School Trustee. Jim’ MacFarlan, who has-played an active part in’mobilizing many groups against the school construction freeze and Bill 86 issued the following statement: “School taxes will again rise in Vancouver this year because of the new provincial government education finance formula. Local ratepayers will pay 66 percent of education costs in the city while the provincial share is a mere 28.5 percent. The situation will likely get worse next year. Only the growing movement of protest which now includes teachers, trade unionists, PTA’s, Communists. NDPers and Liberals can force Bennett to discontinue his government’s attack on educational standards.” ~~ NDP parley protests Canada’s Vietnam role By WILLIAM TURNER “We must protest Canadian participation in the war in Vietnam. It is a war that has no moral or legal justification — a war in which Canada and the Federal government is implicated,’ said NDP provincial leader Robert Strachan, speaking to a crowd of 200 people from the City Hall steps in New Westminster last Saturday. We have waited a long time for our elected leaders to take action in strongly protesting to the U.S. to end the war in Vietnam. We must recognize unless we do something there is a grave danger the war will escalate if allowed to continue,’’ he said. The rally was made up of delegates who took time out from the NDP annual convention to demonstrate their support of the April 27th world- wide protest against the Vietnam war. Professor William Wilmott of UBC, who also spoke at the rally, said: ‘‘One can only assume that the reason the U.S. is prosecuting this war is to prevent the people of Vietnam from deciding upon their own form of government. This is a complete negation of democracy.” Dealing with recent developments for peace, Professor Wilmott pointed out: ‘‘While it appears talks are imminent, the situation has raised cause for alarm. President Johnson’s protestations for peace MAY DAY GREETINGS trom the Fraser have not limited or ended the bombing. rather it has increased in intensity.” Citing figures of increased bombing and troop operations since Johnson’s speech for peace talks. Wilmott concluded: “This war is against Canada’s interest and our complicity makes us an accomplice with the U.S. All people live in hopes that the peace talks will not fail by insisting that the war end immediately.” Mrs. Dorothy Steeves. who chaired the rally, urged that people must make their voices stronger in opposition to the war.
