Herr Stoph said that the events in Czechoslovakia had shown that the imperialists had not abandoned their aims of undermining the Socialist countries. Hastings St. ‘@ HAWAII Vancouver 6, B.C. — 254-2313, ‘Hot’ grape boycott needs a pep-up The recent session of the Vancouver and District Labor Council’ (VLC) decided it was time to ‘‘take another look’ at the boycott campaign against California ‘“‘hot’’ grapes coming into Canada. “Every California grape you buy helps keep a child hungry’. sums up the intent of the present boycott in support of the striking . United Farm Workers Union grape pickers, now in the third year of their strike for decent wages and living conditions. Nevertheless despite these fine sentiments, some 92 carloads of California grapes, as of August 3, have come into Vancouver, an estimated 25 carloads more than last year. And that only covers rail carloadings and does not include the number of transport truck loads that have rolled into the City and province during the same period. Questions have been raised (but not debated) in the VLC as to the trucking of these ‘“‘hot”’ products; questions which have generally been waived aside on the grounds that organized labor is supporting a boycott of scab grapes, rather than in any investigation of. union labor that may be involved in the handling or trucking for such products. However in the opinion of many union spokesmen unless something is done to step up the effectiveness of the boycott, (and the bulk dumping of California grapes in Vancouver and other provincial centers would indicate it is as yet not too effective), it will eventually peter out. A massive re-mobilization of boycott activity, picketting the main centers of distribution, a better public relations job by organized labor etc., is now required to make the California grape boycott really effective. Otherwise the grape pickers’ children will remain hungry. ‘wi ‘Management regrets that it will be unable to meet with union today.” FREE LOOK’ FREE ANNOUNCING FREE PT OFFER A free book offer for every new PT sub turned in during the current PT sub drive.
