Avenue, Maple Ridge, (Haney), B.C. V2x aya. Sludge may
be available from the local sewage treatment district.
If these products are used, it is. important that they be
tested to insure that there is a minimum 1% nitrogen
‘availablity so that micro-organisms do not tie up soil
nitrogen duri ng the decomposition process. Manure should
be tested for Salinity levels. Such tests can be
accomplished by the Agricultural Extension Service or
private soil testing labs. |

It is also important that the materials are free of
viable weed seed. Prior to purchase, it is recommended
that a. sample of the product be placed in a flower pot,
watered, and placed in a warm, sunny. area for a.week or
two. If there is no germination of weeds, it can be
assume the material is suited for use -on turf. IF
Manure or sludge fs purchased, it is adviseable that a
‘city staff. member go to the supplier's yard to insure —
that the product is loaded from the same lot used in the
germi nation test.

Compost can be spread over turf areas by using the city

“trucks designed to apply salt to roadways. The superin-
tendent of parks also indicates that the city can borrow
a three-yard manure Spreader if necessary.
