APPENDIX The standard purpose for our services, used in many constitutions of Boys' and Girls' Clubs across the country, is to provide behavior guidance and to promote the health, social, educational, vocational ana character development of boys and girls. This is a flowery statement, but it has a deep significance if you read into the words. But how do people generally percieve our organization? One of the most common reactions to our clubs is "recreation." They see us as a recreation body, If you walk through the door, your first reaction is "Oh, this is recreation! There are kids playing games and doing all sorts of physical and non-physical activities." We must do all we-can to explain that we are NOT a recreation facility per se. We use recreation as a i201 towards an ends. We are interested in what the boy or girl can do to the ball, rather than what the ball can do to the boy or girl. ; The main purpose of recreation is to Provide a happy time for the majority of people. It is not really inter- ested in the personal problems or the development of the children involved. If recreation involves a ceramics class, it is to teach the skill of'ceramics. Those involved will be evaluated on their success as to whether or not they have completed the required number of products. On the other hand, when a Boys' and Girls! Club runs a ceramics program, it would base its evaluation on the rapport that was built up with the boys and girls within the class.
