A8 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, June 7, 2000 targets Ter Hire a student week race for summer employment THE HIRE A Student program is planning a blitz on Ter- race residents and businesses this week, The program, which places students in casual and full time work between May to August, proclaimed June 5 to June 9 Hire A Student week. During the week, summer employment officer Anne Silsbe will. challenge.residents.: and. -businesses :to. hire students to fill their job vacancies, .~ “Last year we brought-in 12 jobs {during the week], and this year we're hoping for 15 or more,” said Silsbe. Since the beginning of May, the program has had 39 job vacancies, and been able to place 29 students in either casual or full time employment, said Silsbe. She hopes’ that the program will employ more stud- ents this year then last year. - “We want to place 156 students this summer, up from 142 last summer,” said Silsbe. ; Silsbe’s blitz to-attract new employers may already be working. Local resident, Chris Acres desided to call the pro- gram afler a painting project turned into a bigger job than she could handle. “This is the first time I’ve ever used the program,” said Acres. “I'd definately get them [the students} again if I had any other odd jobs to do.” Heather Campbell, a student on correspondence and a third-year veteran of the program, -loves the chance to make some extra money over the summer. “I have a two-year-old daughter and the extra money I can make really helps,” said Campbell.
