The new Code of Practice stresses the duties of the modern press and seis the boundaries newspapers should observe while performing their duty to inform the public. The new code will be a guideline for council directors when adjudicating complaints. New features of the code include an expanded guideline on discrimination, adding ancestry, religion and marital status and a requirement that newspapers disclose during an election campaign, any donations they make to politicians or parties, . The code also requires that newspapers identify: any technical manipulation of a news photograph that may mislead readers. ; The press council consists of 11 directors, including six members of the public, and acts as the newspaper in- dustry’s self-regulating body in B.C., hearing com-: plaints from the public about the conduct of the press. It has more than 120 members, including The Terrace’ Standard. The press council also acts a lobby group, making rep- resentations on freedom of press issues to various levels of goverment, okin: : Traditional Storytellers Are you interested in sharing traditional stories about your, culture with Urban First Nations children and their parents. Skeenavauwer 7 KALUM STREET construction isn't just inconveniencing motorists. Simon Brossoit, owner of L & D Laundromat, says it is ruining bis busitiess, Brossoit opened his business in May and says the con- struction, which had been blocking vehicle access to the front of his building for a couple of weeks, is hitting him hard in what should be his peak scason. Brossoit says the construction has forced a 80 to 85 per cent drop in his business in recent weeks. Cily public works officials say concessions have been made to help businesses keep access during the road con- struction and that vehicles have continued to have access to L & D’s parking Iot on Loen Avenue. But Brossoit says the ‘'no ihru road” sign on Loen has kept people from trying to reach his building, which also houses a cafe, from that side. Up the street, Gianaino Pretto and bis wile, Sheila Pretto, say they have also felt the affects at their Sheil gas station but that the work is just something they have to deal with. “Tt’s just got to be done,”’ she says. _ 0 Mr. Pretto says business is down about 50 per cent from last year but that part of that may also be due to the econo- my. Paving is scheduled to be completed by Aug. 31 and all Simon Brossoit : ’ | ‘of Kalum’s road work stiould be finished by Sept. 30. B he finest steak night in town!
