Well that’s the same feel- ing Daniel Wesley got be- fore his legs got crushed beneath a freight train at the age of 13. Wesley was hospitalized during the same time Rick Hansen — the famous Ca- nadian = paraplegic §==who travelled around the world in his wheelchair — was there, The two quickly be- came friends. Ever since his accident, Wesley made sure to never ignore his gut feelings. And it is this acute sense of listening that has helped Wesley become the overall champion of the 1997 Dis- abled Alpine Skiing World Cup in France. Wesley visited Thormhili Elementary Nov, 17 spread- ing the message of love — and the importance of listen- ing to your heart. “The single most impor- lant message is that if you listen to your heart, it will help you make good choices,’” Wesley said, Wesley used the aluminum base he mounts his skis on as an analogy for expressing the importance of having a solid base — in his case, a base that helps him scream down mountain DISABLED WORLD Cup ski champion Danie! It was that passion, or that “warm fuzzy feeling” that helped him beat out 100 of the world’s best alpine skiers in France, “Go enjoy yourself and have fun when you’re com- peting,”’ he told students. Wesley will also be com- peting in alpine skiing at the 1998 -Para-Olympics in Nagano, Japan. ‘In disabled sports, we're really a tongh lot of guys, i?s not a cake walk,’ he said about the fierce compe- tition. Bluebacks swimming in medals from PG meet BLUEBACK swimmers are hoping to carry the momentum from a recent strong showing in Prince George to one of their big- gest mect of the year. The swimmers were In Prince George November 14-16 for the Sight and Sound Invitational..A num- ber of Bluebacks came home with medals, and many had 100 per cent best times. “Tt was a great meet — one of aur stronger per- formances in the last couple of years,”’ says coach Mike Carlyle, ‘It’s a super show- ing early in the season.”” Several athletes had out- standing performances, in- cluding Jenine Barton. Barton won the ILM. Chal- lenge and took four golds and three silvers. “‘That’s 4a great con- fidence booster for her,’’ Carlyle says. Dylan Evans also had a good meet, picking up several medals. ‘"He’s been working real- ly, really hard and it’s ob- vidusly paid-off,”’ says Car- lyie. Amanda Fillion, Chance Sterner and Fernando Polanco also had 100 per cent best times. Stemmer was taking up to 20 seconds off his times in some events. Terrace really swept the medals in the 13-14 year-old boys category, taking four of the top five spots, Carlyle says that the group, consisting of Tristan Brown, Arend Stamhuis, Dylan Evans and Kyle Narzt has been really pushing each other to be their best. “They train together and they're always boosting each other up,’’ he says. Now Carlyle says he hopes some of the momentum from Prince George will carry over to the Richmond Racers, one of the team’s biggest meets, Ten Bluebacks are attend- ing that meet. The others will be battling it out in an- other meet in Prince Rupert. Both events take place during the first weekend in December. . Cal girls finish season CAL’S SENIOR girls vol- leybal] team bad a good showing at the Zone Finals, two weekends ago, but they didn’t make the Provincials. Six teams competed at the Zones, including this year’s powerhouse, Charles Hays. An early loss te MESS set the gids up in a semi-final match with Hays. And Cal wasn’t quite ready for the challenge. The Kermodes came out Strong in at first, pulling ahead of Hays 13-9. But they couldn’t finish off the feisty Rupert squad and ended up losing 15-13. They Jost the next game 15-8. That sent Hays into the consolation finals. There, the girls beat Kitimat in two Straight to end up third. But while it wasn’t the finish the girls were hoping for, coach Jackie Thomsen says she was proud of their efforts. ‘We had strong showings in both Kelowna and the Zones,’’ she says. ‘'They improved a lot, especially some of the Grade 1is.’’ Team Captain Ashley Whitford was also voted tournament all-star. “She will be missed next year,’’ Thomsen says. man rt Big Bertha Woods...
