Thornhill ‘A’ takes own tournament | A record of 12 wins out of 13 matches gave Thornhill ‘A’ boys the championship of their junior ~ high school volleyball tourna- ‘ment on the Oct. 15 weekend. -Thornhill’s ‘A’ girls also made it to the final of their 10-team draw, but lost out to Kitimat for the title. Looking at the girls’ side, their 10 teams were split into divisions of five for round-robin play. Following this, the top two on each side went into semi-final action. Third-place teams met to decide fifth and sixth places. Kitimat posted a perfect eight- win, n no-loss record to advance to firstin their division. Thorn- hill ‘B’ moved into the semis on a five-win, three-loss record. In the other division, Thorn- hill ‘A’ took first at seven wins, one loss. Terrace Skeena moved up with five-and-three. In the girls’ semis, Thornhill ‘A’ beat Thornhill ‘B’ 15-4, 15-8. Kitimat took Skeena 15-10, 12-15, 15-7. In the playoff for third and fourth, Skeena defeated Thorn- hill ‘B’ 15-12, 15-11. The fifth and sixth place match saw Booth of Prince Rupert knock off Kit- wanga 8-15, 15-13, 15-10. The championship game was poten . Both finalists posted eight- win, no-loss marks in the round- ‘robin. Smithers (six-and-two) and Skeena (five-and-three) also moved into the semi-finals. Both semis were decided in ‘straight sets — Thornhill over Smithers 15-3, 15-9, and Kitimat over Skeena 15-8, 15-5. ‘Smithers and Skeena dropped to the third and fourth playoff game which went to Skeena 15-9, 15-8. . The playoff for fifth and sixth needed three sets before Kit- wanga downed Thornhill ‘B’ 12-15, 15-9, 15-10. The championship match saw Thornhill’ take the first game handily by a 15-4 score. Kitimat ‘came back to hand Thornhill their only loss — 10-15, But Thornhill regrouped and down- ‘ed the Aluminum City boys 15-7 to capture their own tourna- ment. During presentations, Thorn- hill ‘A’ boys added to the win- ning collection by being named the most sportsmanlike team. For the girls’ side, Houston went home with the award for best sports. . Six players on each side of the tourney were named to the all- star team. These were as follows: Girls — Kristen Anderson -(P.R. Booth), Rochelle Pelletier (Skeena), Spring Johnson (Kit- wanga), Rachelle Selina (Kiti- mat), Colleen Johnston (Kiti- mat), Marg Holosko (Thornhill).
