JULIE CHRISTIE ey A ro The celebrated actress, Julie Christie engages in what might be termed “thespic shadow-boxing” in her newest screen outing andit wasn't exactly a snap. In MGM’s unique thriller, "Demon Seed”, she plays most of her major scenes with an unseen adversary — a super-computer that forces her to be its mate ina bizarre experiment procreate. Happily, Ms. Christie has the anting reserves on which to draw, the bravura talent that allows her to be riveting all by herself, but still it was not a trifling task. *t¥ou don’t have anyone to react to, you know,” she points out. “The thing about actors is that when you’re working with them they’re constantly surprising yau. So you are always on the edge of a cliff, really.” Without a cliff-hanging element to play against, “Demon Seed’ definitely was a challenge, a film for which the actress made ial preparations. en did a lot of work beforehand, ‘yesearch,” she says. “That's the only kind of to . * opportuni mostly - preparation I do, though. I: avoid acting exercises or anything like that.” | o os instinctive, intuitive . player; Ms. Christie .war-_ med ta acting at an early age. an ; “I was always scared to death in school,”. she | remembers. “Everybody | seemed prettier, smarter, | * more talented than 1, The only time I felt like a person woe ina Twas a stage, acting in a school play. Then I could hide behind the character I was playing.” Interestingly,. after she had made a mark for herself -“She’s a joy to work with, so Generous with co-actors, and a gorgeous-looking lady. But I was principally impressed by the special dimension 1 found in her, which is that she is no ac- cessible and vulnerable to life.and to situations.” - . The actress took par- ticular pleasure in the physical situations -of ‘Demon Seed produced hy Herb Jaffe rom a screenplay by Robert Jaffe and Roger 0. Hirson, mo “Rarely do I get a film with lots of action and the to be showered with sparks and fall: into pits,” she observes. Ac- ‘tually, while she does not fall into a single pit in the picture, she is showered with .sparks, nearly elec- trocuted, held prisoner in her own home where even . the shutters slam shut at the computer’s' command and tied to a laboratory table for. unmentionable .tests — among . other terrifying things. She.even resorts to a blowtorch to fight Proteus, 4, which was- the computer, at one point. “I've never seen Juli work at this level in any af her other movies,” com- ments ‘director Donald Cammell. “She has this ability to take something and make it larger than life. It’s like a great actress or actor will do, like Olivier or Brando at their best. They become so intimately involved with the character they'll take you anywhere and you'll identify and believe in them.” Perhaps Ms. Christie is extraordinarily good at acting because she enjoys it so much. “TI get a satisfaction out of it,” she confirms. “All I want is to - work with good material under a good director. Being: a star is meaningless, really, unless you are also a real actress and that's what I’m determined to be.” She prefers sereen to stage acting. .° “I'm in love ‘with the- cinema,” she states. “In the theater, the audience won't | forgive you if you break the ‘Demon Seed’ walloping . le with a difference. spell.
