The officers also reported that the mem- bership was down again this year but had hopes that the Bureau would be hiring more inspectors soon. The Report was optimistic that job problems that had plagued the Local over the years would soon be eliminated through the support of the IWA coast local unions who have promised to help maintain the inspectors. DON McMAHON, who was for many years the Local’s Conductor. — ANNUAL: INCOME PROGRAM | } | | } | | } | o i The Ontario government has announced that it will under- take a guaranteed annual income program early next year as an experiment to help find out if guaranteeing a family’s income affects the desire to work. The province of Manitoba announced its intention to pro- ceed with such a program about a year ago. Its program will take effect in February 1974 when 750 families from Winnipeg and three rural areas will receive income supple- ments for three years. The federal governmént has agreed to pay 75 percentofthe cost of the project. Manitoba’s Health and Social Development Minister Rene Toupin has announced that Dauphin will be the first rural community to be sur- veyed for the GAI experiment. The Manitoba government has set up a Minimum Annual Income Project staff which will train personnel in survey techniques. The GAI project is a joint research effort of the pro- vincial and federal govern- ments, part of a social security review now being conducted — Jointly by all ten provinces and _ the federal administration, __ .
