Hypocrisy Vs. guns i ORMAL protests in the United Nations against the ruthless ssacres of African people in the Portuguese colony of Angola by the Salazar fascist government ay have embarrassed “Free est” diplomats, but it didn’t halt_ ef even slow up the bloody hand ef Portugal’s act of genocide in Angola. 'Tens of thousands of Angola natives fleeing across the Congo border to seek refuge from the ter- ror of Portuguese troops, relate harrowing stories of the cold- blooded murder of whole commu- nities and villages given to the flames. ' Protests are daily voiced by the governments of. Afro-Asian na- tions, by the peoples and govern- ments of the socialist world, and by progressive peoples everywhere. Seemingly these protests fall on deaf ears, or on those who weigh up the interests of their war al- liance (NATO) as against the wanton murder of tens of thous- ands of Negro peoples, men and women, old and young. Seemingly also, in view of their silence, they acquiesce in this fascist genocide in order to preserve the “unity” of their NATO “alliance’’. In the UN Security Council vote protesting Portugal’s blood bath in Angola, the “Christian” spokes- men of Britain and France “ab- stained”. This is not hard to under- stand, since both have been sup- plying their NATO “ally” Portugal with arms to do this precise job. That is shameful indeed, but for Canadians doubly so, since the Diefenbaker government has been doing exactly the same thing; sell- ing arms to the ruthless dictator of Portugal with which he can crush the struggles of the Angola peoples for independence and self- government. To crush a_ people struggling for the right to freedom in their own country. A naked image of Tory dupli- city; demagogic speeches against racial persecution in Verwoerd’s Seuth Africa; guns to Salazar to crush the right of racial equality, dignity and self-government in Angola. Our destiny—peace 4 N this Canada Day, marking the 94th birthday of our nation, never was the sovereign independence, peace and well-being of a people so gravely threatened as at this milestone of our brief history. ; Going on two decades under suc- cessive Liberal and Tory govern- ment, the rich natural resources of this country, the fate of its indus- trial development, its military command and its very skies, have been alienated and brought under the dictates and domination of U.S. imperialism. Under the smoke sereen of so-called U.S.-Canada “integration”, Canadian sovereign- ty has been treasonably subverted. On this 94th birthday the bal- ance sheet of this “integration” stands out with stark nakedness. Chronic unemployment and lower- ing wage standards affecting mil- lions of Canadians. Rising taxation and living costs, accompanied by ‘reckless “defence” spending, total- ling $2 billion annually. Stationary cr declining social services, with education and other recreational and cultural opportunities for the nation’s youth, facing its greatest crisis since Confederation in 1867. While Canada’s people urgently — seek disarmament and peace and f an end to coldwar insanity, the — Diefenbaker government commits” Canada to nuclear bombs on Canay — dian territory, by squandering — -pillions for ~ high - priced _ U5: warheads. On-this 94th birthday Canada § deserves a better fate than mem bership in Washington’s “nucleat club” with its staggering 4 wasteful cost, its degrading d@ pendence (for Canada) upon t will of U.S. trigger-happy nuclear maniacs, implicit in the “Kennedy” Doctrine” usurpation of sovereig™ authority. Tom McEwen N CASE our readers are unaware j of his identity, Mr. Bruce Hut- chison is editor of the Victoria Daily Times. With some literary monuments to his credit, notably his book on the late Mackenzie King, The Incredible Canadian and later The Mighty Fraser, Mr. Hut- chison is often mistakenly referred to as the “dean” of Canadian let- ters. _. Be that as it may Mr. Hutchison has a free and easy style of writing, often informative but seldom pro- books a few years ago Stanley Ryerson of Toronto described the but a poor historian’, which just about sums it up. that Victoria’s two daily papers, the Victoria Daily Times and the Victoria Colonist are both pro- duced in the same _ institution. ois partisan politics, the one churns out a daily diet of Liberal pablum, same. Commenting on one of his - Victoria editor as ‘“‘a fine journalist » It may be mentioned in passing” “Typical of the elasticity of bourge- the other a Tory mixture of the ‘Now back to the “dean”. In the June 6th edition of the Victoria Daily Times is an editorial page feature entitled “Loose Ends... Copy of a Secret Report to Mos- cow”’, by Bruce Hutchison. It seems that during some four political by-elections (probably the most recent ones) a “Russian Spy” was in our midst taking volumin- ous notes and making some fore- casts on the inevitable (but not so soon?) collapse of capitalism in Canada. This particular “Russian spy”, obviously an extremely obliging chap, according to editor © Hutchison, “has kindly given me a copy of his report to Moscow, which is reproduced here without comment”’, ee A most unorthodox -procedure for a ‘‘Russian” or any other “spy” to engage in. After all what’s the use of “spying” if the data so col- lected is going to be “kindly” handed over to the newspapers of the country where the “spying” is . done? First thing you know the CIA, FBI, OSS; RCMP and all the other professional snooper outfits would be out of a job, However, there it is, 20 column- inches of pure unadulterated tripe which Hutchison claims a “Russian spy ... has kindly given me”, Had any Times or Colonist reporter left such infantile bilge on the editor’s desk, the poor lad would have been out on the street looking for an- other meal ticket, Let’s put the record straight. The Hutchison “Copy of a Secret Re- port to Moscow” is an obvious erude forgery. No ‘Russian’ or Canadian taking a gander at “the political system of Canada’’, what- ever his or her intellectual rating, could come up with such a mess Of political borscht as Hutchison’s “kindly Russian spy’. Not even with the latest Fleming budget thrown in to accentuate the mess. — The coldwar punchline is given —~ in the concluding paragraph. It also “gives away” the HutchisoP forgery. this alleged report that “... even - in a revolutionary situation the collapse of Canada should not be ~ immediately assumed.
