Ws I have had calls from parents of children with allergies that did not manifest themselves until the child attended school. One parent whose son attened the same school as mine, informed me that her son had severe allergy problems during his time there. He had left that school last year and does not have a problem now.I could not understand that because the school he now attends is also on the list of the four schools in aquestion. It took me a while to realize what had probably happened.Since he has attended the second school,he has not been exposed to any chemical due to the fact that wet weather had held up the maintainance program for 1981. I would hope that it is obvious that we must draw the conclusions that these chemicals have an unproven safety record and as such are indeed most questionable and must not be used. I would like at this point to make a few comments concerning the integrity of Mr. Bram Hoogendoorn.I feel,as Mr. Hoogendoorn is aware, that. he was extremely cooperative with me in supplying the list that I had requested, I am also convinced that Mr. Hoogendoorn was doing his job to the best of his ability.I do not believe that he was conscious of the dangers involved. At the Public Meeting he stated that he had studied for three days to receive his pesticide license.I do not hold him to be at all responsible for this situation and I am anxious that he not be used as a scapegoat in a matter that was beyond his control. May I say in closing that I think the key words in this issue are questionable, unnecessary, and ludicrous. It is ludicrous to risk human health by using questionable and unnecessary chemicals for the benefit of school- grounds, varks, ect. free of weeds. i have been surprised to find that the onus has been on the veople to prove that these chemicals are not safe rather than our Council proving to us that they are.If you do not decide upon this issue with both logic and consideration of human life then you are not fit to be members of Council. I have asked this question of our Council. Can you guarantee me that the use of these chemicals will not affect the health of my son,or will not nullify the effects of his chemotherapy drugs,or that they will not interact with the inedications of the other children at these schools,or affect the health of the other children or staff members?I have not as yet received an answer to my question, and I am requesting an answer in writing if you feel that your answer is affirmative. ; I sincerely hope that Council will vote on behalf of the health and safety of the residents of Port Coquitlam.
