He ae SRS e Te Sect 3. Mayor and Council DATE: March 9, 1973 j Health Comnittee . CG OU i 12 1973 The Health Committee met in the Council Chambers of the City Hall on Thursday, March 8, 1973. Present were Chairman, Alderman Meyer; Alderman Traboulay; Dr. Munroe of the Simon Fraser Health Unit; L.D. Pollock, City Administrator and guest Mr. W. Wescott, Youth Officer for the Burnaby School Board. 1. Drug Abuse In conjunction with discussion on a number of other items respecting drug education and abuse the Committee has discussed, with experts in the field, the matter of high pressure salesmanship and continual promotion of various patent medicines as health aids. It appears to be the general consensus that drug use is encouraged by a pill oriented society and is further aggravated by the high pressure advertising particularly on T.V. and in the newspapers. The Provincial Government in the past has banned cigarette and alcohol advertising and the Committee feels that similar action should be taken to regulate the advertising of patent medicines, non perscription drugs etc. Recommendation The Committee recommends that a letter be sent to the Minister of Health recommending that in line with the Provincial Government's action in banning tobacco dnd alcohol advertising that similar action be taken to regulate or prohibit advertising of patent medicines and non perscription drugs. 2. Community Care Facility Licence - Hawthorne Lodge The Committee received a request to approve the new senior citizens six storey personal care home for a community care facilities licence.
