Port Coquitlam Amateur Athletic Association P.O. BOX 132 © PORT COQUITLAM, B.C. 26th April, 1973. The City Council, Port Coquitian. Gentlemen, In response to your request for further information to support our request for financial assistance, we submit the following details. The Amateur Athletic Association is like any other purchaser of goods and services, subject to the effects of inflation, and will therefore require to raise additional funds each year to meet its commitiments and obligations. One of its prime purposes is to provide the maximum number of athletic pursuits at a cost which will allow any child, irrespective of the family's financial circumstances to participate. All members wf the P.C.oA.AcdAe hold the belief that such activities provide a meaningful veticle which will be of benefit not only to the participants put to society in general. The variety of sports offered provide for both individuals and teams, although team sports are predominant. This purpose is being met. Taking two examples, Ice Hockey and Soccer, the two winter sports. Registration fees equate to approximately 30% of the costs of the sports. The registration fees are substantially lower than in the surrounding area, Ice Hockey is offered in Port Coquitlam at $8.00 per boy, while in Coquitlam and Port Moody, registration fees are approximately $15.00 and 318.00 respectively. Soccer registration is $3.90 compared to $7250 in Coquitlam, where according to unconfirmed reports it will rise next season to $10.00. Many areas use ability to pay as a means of limitation on registrations. This will obviously work, but is absolutely contrary to the objectives of the P.C.A.A.Ao, since limitations if necessary, must never be based on & family's ability to pay. As you are all aware, the population is continuing to grow which will in turn impose an additional strain on the finances of P.C.A.A-A. The costs incurred by the sports varies directly with the registration. Size does not bring economies, it merely increases the amount to be raised. . It costs the same amownt to »rovide for each child. This voint is, of course, the main argunent for any financial support from the City being based on a per capita system, rather than a flat amount, which as we increase in size would result in diminishing support per child as suown over: Nore. Representatives will be tn attendances. Civy Ceenty
