January 29th, 1973 2... That the $18,000.00. for tennis courts be set aside for building the Same at Routley Park, | oo Carried. Aldermen Thompson and Mabbett voted against the resolution. “Prior to passage of the foregoing resolution, Alderman Lakiug ad~ ' vised that the area set aside at Mary Hill Junior Secondary School for construction of the proposed temis courts was quite low, and without fill, vould be an unsatisfactory site for that purpose; therefore, it was the opinion of the Committee that tennis courts should be constructed at Routley Park for the present and that an agreement be made with the School Board to ‘fill the proposed site at the school on a gradual basis over perhaps a three “year period, before participating with the School Roard in construction of tennis courts at that location. Alderman Traboulay inquired how many courts it waS proposed to construct at Routley Park and Alderman Laking ad- used that two would be built. Alderman Traboulay Stated his view that $18,000.00 was a lot of money for two tennis courts, and irquired whether or not it would be possible for the School Board to yarticipate in the construc- tion of four courts rather than the two now. proposed. Miss Janna Taylor of the Parks and Recreation Department advised that monies may be made available from funds apportioned for School site preparation; however, Mrs, K. Whiting, School Trustee, pointed out that this would not be a large amount due to the limited funds available for site preparation. Alderman Laking advised that the Routley Park site had been recommended as it is uncertain at this time | how much extra land would be required for future building at the Port Recreation Centre, which will also require clearing and filling, and, fur- ther, that funds are not available at this time to build four courts. Alderman Thompson commented that there is.no doubt. a need for courts at Routley Park; however, he expressed the view thar che major need for competitive courts at the Port Recreation Centre should be fulfilled and stated he therefore dis- agreed with the xecommendation. Alderman Meyer stated he felt people parti- Cipation should come before competitive sport, and that he was in favour of the recommendation, Moved by Alderman Mabbett: Seconded by Alderman Traboulay: | That the foregoing propased: resolution with respect te setting aside 918,000.00 for building tennis courts at Routley Park be tabled for one week and discussed ata joint meeting with the School Board scheduled to be held on January 30th, 1973, Defeated, Aldermen Nabbett and Traboulay voted in favour of the resolution.
