Approximately 300 skaters entered the competition. Daniele Berquist photo Timbermen are tops Three straight victories enabled the Terrace Timbermen to finish with the best overall record at the annual Burns Lake Oldtimers’ Hockey Tour- Nament on the Nov. 22 weekend. The eight-team series had each squad play two games to determine posi- tions for the ‘A’, ‘B’, ‘C’ and ‘D’ finals. The Timbermen started with a 7-1 win over Burns Lake Orange. Rino Michaud, Rick Letawski and John Taylor each scored twice, while Rod Hunter notched a single. In their next game, the Timbermen edged Kitimat Merchants 6-5 with Michaud again scoring a pair. Letawski, Taylor, Hunter and Bob Wilson had one each. In the ‘A’ Division final, Terrace outscored Prince George Mohawks 4-3. Michaud had a hat trick for the final. Taylor got the other goal. Kitimat lost out 7-4 to Burns Lake Black in the final of ‘B’ side. Houston Hobblers downed Fort St. James to take ‘C’ side, and Smithers Hilltops beat Burns Lake Orange to capture ‘D’ side. In other games, Kitimat beat Fort St. James 11-6, Smithers lost 8-5 to Burns Lake Black and 3-0 to Houston, Fort St. James downed Burns Lake Orange 7-5, and Prince George beat Houston 6-5 and Burns Lake Black 6-4. Oldtimers hockey set It’s Sinithers’ turn to host an Oldtimers’ Hockey Tournament this coming weekend, and they've at- tracted 1G teams to their annual event. . Four of the teams are playing in a straight round- robin series. They are Prince Rupert Wrinkles, Terrace Timbermen, Smithers Drillers and Burns Lake. The remaining six teams are split into threesomes for round-robin play, then cross over against the other group. The meet was hosted by the Kitimat Dynamics Gym Club at Riverlodge Rec, Center. Six girls from Pre Com- petitive level attended. They were Rosa Mikaloff, Trina Mateus, Darlene Wolfe, Jennifer Neves, Felicia Arbuah, Melissa Mogg and their coach Debby Sabourin. The gymnasts were ex- cited and nervous since it was their first competi- tion. The meet was friendly and a new experience for the young gymnasts. But they handled the event well, Each gymnast received a certificate and a junior olympic badge. The following gymnasts receiv- ed ribbons (Merit under 10 years of age) Trina Mateus: first place on bars, floor and vault. Felicia Arbuah: second on bars third on beam and third on vault. Darlene Wolfe: third on bars and third on beam. So keep up the good work girls and your next meet should be just as fun and rewarding. _ Debbie Sabourin is the head coach for the Recrea- tional Programs, as well as assistant coach for the Pre Competition Division. She graduated from the University of Victoria, completing a degree in Elememtary Education and is now a substitute teacher in the Terrace District. Sabourin has this to say about herself, ‘‘I coach gymnastics because I love the sport. I attended classes at the gymnastics: academy in Port Alberni for six years and have mainly coached Recrea- tion in Nanaimo and Vic- toria. I have also coached gymnastics through the Special Olympics Program in Victoria, I’m really looking for- ward to working with everyone involved in the Peaks this year. Terrace has a lot of talent, en- thusiastic gymnast’s and it will be fun to see them develop to their potential.’’ - School swimmers achieve merit Terrace competitors failed to win any medals, but that’s no shame when you consider they swam apainst some of the top Canadian teenaged athletes in the B.C. School Swim Championships at UBC on the Nov. 22 weekend. The Caledonia high school team did manage placings in three of the finals against more than 200 swimmers, which is quite an achievement con- sidering each event had 24 teams or’‘individuals trying to reach the eight spots in CHRISTMAS the finals. Terrace’s mixed relay team of Tracey McFar- land, Tammi. Hodson, Brad Lane and Tony Broman, placed sixth in the 200-metre freestyle race, and then took an cighth-place finish in. the 200 medley relay. Lane also came up with eighth place in the 50-metre freestyle. Lane and McFarland came close to making two other finals. Brad was ninth in the 50: butterfly while Tracey was ninth in the 100 freestyle.
