WINTERIZE YOUR POND

| sincerely hope that your pond expériences
this year where as good as mine. It has been an
exciting year for me as | have built new ponds,
updated old ones to minimize maintenance, and
just relaxed next them. It’s a job that I truly enjoy
and hope | never get tired of it.

The season is drawing to a close and it’s time
to think of winter. Winterizing a pond is not a
big job, but it is a very important one..In the fall:
water plants die back and falling leaves drop in
the water. This organic matter looks harmless
enough but causes. a serious threat to your
fish. Decaying organics and fish waste release.
‘poisonous gases that pollute your water. Your
pond is aclosed circuit, unlike lakes and streams.
that continue to flush themselves out. Because’
of this you must provide a source of oxygen and
an open spot in the ice. This allows gases to
escape, keeping your fish healthy and happy.
Here are a few tips to aid in pond winterization.

® Cut your.water plants back to the - _
- ground to.remove as much organic .
debris from your pond as possible.
® Provide a constant source of aeration. ,
e Provide an opening in the ice by using °
_* an ice hole heater or circulating pump. .
