B4 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, April 12, 2000 Petroglyphs a must see NOW THAT the weather is getting nicer, people should be getting out and exploring our wonderful area, We have so many beautiful and scenic views to explore. This lovely picture by local photographer Joe Hits was take at Tyee. Looking at the photo, it’s almost human like. The face looks so real - it’s like someone is peek- ing and looking at you through the bushes. ‘THERE YVONNE MOEN HERE After doing some checking around I was able to find a little infor- mation about local petro- glyphs. a After speaking with my very good friend Esabelle McKee at the Kitselas of- fice, this is what I’ve learned: Petroglyphs are makers and signs on rocks telling a story. It maybe of a land- mark made by a certain chief of a tribe, usually showing ownership of their territory. This specific unique pe- troglyph of Tsimshians can be found on the east side THIS PETROGLYPH is located along Highway 16 towards Prince Rupert. across from Port Essington coming from Prince Ru- pert. It’s at the Tyee over- pass, about 60 miles from Terrace. So perhaps the next time you are driving home from Prince Rupert you will look for it. Also at this location, across from the Skeena River, are the Frizzell Hotsprings. The spring is named after George Friz- zell, a well-known butcher and businessman in Port Essington and Prince Ru- pert. In the 1920’s, the spring was brought by him. He built a bathhouse and planned further develop- ment, but Port Essington was already beginning its long, slow decline into ob- livion. By 1930, the bathhouse was abandoned. It is now privately owned. If you have any infor- mation on local petro- glyphs please phone me. Apparently their were about 12 of these in. the area, but now there’ s only nine left. Can anyone also help identify the giant mosquito carving above the Rain- bow Lodge, or somewhere in that vicinity. If you wish to discuss these few items please phone me at 638-0423.
