Youth Sac-- (triple header. starts a2 hoon’ vat Hikers eye new and old The Terrace hiking club will be trekking along a number of old favourites but will begin its sum- mer series with something new. Sunday, June 6 is the date for fackling a trail in the Williams Creek area, along the Old Lakelse Lake Rd. It’s an approximately 9km drive from town, the last kilometre of road being very rough -- four- wheel drive only. Therefore, the -group will walk in from there; The trail itself is an old one leading tothe timberline and a nice lake. The walk will take about two hours and is classed as moderate, but be prepared for a few wet spots along the way. Meet at the library at 10 a.m. The following weckend, June 13, Andimaul Lookout, near Kitwanga, and the Shandilla Lakes are the destination. Its about a three kilometre walk to the lookout, the last half of which is on the steep side. But there’s an excellent view and Games sports axed While most northwesterners are’ only just beginning to enjoy the idea summer is on its: way, one "group has had nothing but winter on its mind, Strange, -dut understandable. given they are the organizers of "the 1994.B,C, Winter Games, tof ‘be held in Smithers. And they have now settled on what sports will be included in ’ that March 10-13 extravaganza. Naturally, skiing figures large in the plans with alpine, disabled, - _ cross-country, freestyle and the - biathion. And the lugers will be _ sledding for medals again. Also on the card is Special Olympic figure skating, intro- duced for the first time this year in Kitimat. But gone from the ice are figure "skating, speed skating, women’s hockey, broomball and ringette. © Other cqsuattigs , are judo and. men’s and-women’s basketball. ; “x The problem, - explained + co- ordinator Kim Burt, is Smithers doesn’t have the facilities to stage those events as well as the 22 Selected, There's good news, however, for boys and girls curling teams. They’re back after being left out in the cold in Kitimat, which doesn’t have a curling rink... Other sports selected for the "94 . Games are badminton, bowling, gymnastics, youth and masters swimming, kwon-do, weightlifting — and” powerlifting. Close to 2,000 athletes are ex- pected to descend on Smithers for the Games. Gender. gap to remain A University of B.C. professor claims a popular scientific theory - that women will one day run as fast as men is off track, . table tennis, : tac- show of wild flowers once there. The Shandilia lakes are just beyond Kitwanga, a 2.5km hike in over an old logging road and trail. This one is not steep, Again, everyone meets at the li- brary at 10 a.m. June 20 the club makes a return visit to the Watson Lakes near Cedarvale, This route proved so popular in the spring, it's back by “public ~demand’’, The trail is approximately 3km one-way, a little steep at the be- ginning but then rolling terrain. There are three pretty lakes to be seen.and the flowers should also be out by then. Meet at the library at 10 am. and bring lunch. The final hike of the month is June 27 and the group again heads cast, this time for Black Sister. Tt’s a 65km highway drive fol- lowed by 5km of logging road that was in good shape Jast year, The hike itself is 3km, all uphill SPORT WORLD ~ Your — Summer Sport © Tennis i * Discount Golf f « Bikes , * Roller Blades * Runners * Sports Wear. | * Swim Suits | « Water Sports -* Soccer * Team Hats i * Jerseys & More | BEST VALUE | _ BEST SELECTION _ BEST.
